Director, Corporate Affairs - U.S Advocacy

The Director, Corporate Affairs, reports to the Head of U.S. Advocacy and is located in Washington, D.C. The candidate will be responsible for helping develop sophisticated strategies to advance Vanguard's Global Public Policy agenda, complementing advocacy objectives, while working closely with Vanguard's Corporate Communications team. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a keen understanding of the policy and media environments focused on Congress, the Administration, state legislatures, and related public policy efforts, including relevant third-party groups.
What You'll Do
- Help develop sophisticated strategies and implement effective tactics to create and advance Vanguard's public policy agenda through external third parties to protect and advocate for the interests of Vanguard and its shareholders.
- Evaluate information based on understanding of public policy implications, Vanguard's operating model and business areas, and best practices in communicating with and influencing external third parties.
- Maintain strong working relationships with media, professional and industry trade associations, consultants, thought leaders, and internal stakeholders to understand their approach and position on areas of focus. Note this is not an on the record position.
- Help prepare data-based collateral for external meetings and interviews as well as briefing materials for senior Vanguard leaders, including the CEO and President, among others.
- Lead initiatives to develop and execute visually compelling communication strategies that align with Vanguard policy messaging goals across multiple platforms.
- Stay abreast of political and policy developments.
- Execute effective and timely communication with the business and other stakeholders. Serves as a trusted expert to consult with business leaders.
- Write op-eds and talking points for use by senior Vanguard leaders.
- Coordinate with the broader Global Public Policy and Public Relations team, as appropriate.
What it Takes
- Minimum of five-ten years related work experience in public affairs, communications, or the financial services industry, congressional and/or regulatory experience preferred but not required.
- Proven ability to manage and grow relationships.
- Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across audiences.
- Knowledge of relevant public policy issues and venues, particularly related to asset management, financial services, retirement, and tax policy, required.
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred but not required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work productively in a communicative, dynamic and team-oriented environment.
- Strong political acumen and the ability to grasp complex issues and work collaboratively.
- Strong relationship management skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work quickly and independently; attentive to detail; sensitive to deadlines.
