The Clarion Ledger, part of USATODAY NETWORK., is seeking an insatiably curious reporter to cover dynamic Suburban News, Growth and Development in the Jackson, Mississippi, area as well as general assignments and breaking news as needed. This position would emphasize new developments as well as watchdog reporting that scrutinizes the use of taxpayer money and effectiveness of public policy and programs. Produces high-value digital content with visuals, including breaking news and enterprise stories that provide context and analysis. Facilitates reader interactions with key government officials.

Suburban Madison County boasts some of the state's highest incomes and fastest-growing communities. Suburban Rankin County is increasingly a player for major business. Both areas feature the growth of data centers, which demand scrutiny.

The Jackson area is home to a fantastic food scene and is great for music and entertainment, with new opportunities in these areas sprouting regularly.

Typical Job Duties:

  • Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics. Works toward becoming the community's leading voice in the area of expertise.
  • Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.) Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Works with editors and regional content strategists to evaluate what's working and what's not and develop ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Collaborates with content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (e.g., photos, videos and graphics). Capture basic photos and video as needed.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Coaches and mentors less-experienced journalists.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
  • Breaking news on a variety of subjects as needed. Other topics could be covered depending on the candidate's skillsets.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's in communications, journalism or equivalent in experience and education.
  • Three years' experience developing a personal brand and reader base.
  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
