High School Sports Reporter
USA TODAY Sports is seeking a dynamic and versatile sports writer to join in the growth and expansion of high school sports coverage within the nation's largest news media organization.
The selected applicant will be a key contributor to USA TODAY Sports' national high school editorial team, helping to usher in the next chapter of influential journalism and content creation that has stood at the forefront of high school sports since 1982.
The writer will provide expert national and regional oversight for USA TODAY's Super 25 and All-USA franchises, serving as the authorities on naming national champions, All-Americans and more across sports at the national, regional and state levels.
This role requires content creation for website and social media, in addition to editing. The team will be responsible for developing and leading strategic content calendars, as well as building relationships with high schools, academies and clubs to assist in data collection (stats, player info, records, etc.).
We're looking for someone who is a self-starter and raring to achieve ambitious goals. Journalists in this role will be liaisons between the national high school sports team and USA TODAY Network editors and writers, working cross-functionally across 200+ newsrooms to maximize impact for each sports season.
This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert regional oversight in one or more of USA TODAY Sports' five defined regions (East, West, Midwest, Southeast, Southwest). This includes players for All-USA consideration and teams for Super 25 rankings, as well as original content creation.
- Develop and lead strategic content calendars and align strategies to maximize reach for All-USA and Super 25 franchises.
- Build relationships with schools/Ads, assist with data collection-stats, player info, records-and assist with social media collaborations for general awareness.
- Collaborate with editors and writers across the USA TODAY Network on content creation and needs.
- Proactively contribute and ideate on the next big thing in high school sports coverage.

Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least three years of delivering high-impact journalism on website and multimedia platforms, including social-first video.
- Strong understanding of high school sports landscape, including academies and clubs.
- Comfort using performance metrics to measure impact and develop stronger editorial strategies.
- Strong collaborator who works well with others, can juggle multiple projects and seeks positive outcomes and solutions under tight deadlines.
- Excellent written, verbal and editing skills with sharp attention to detail.
- Strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity.
- Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.
- Candidates should have facility with AI and automation and experience in using it to enhance their journalism.

The hourly rate for this role will range between $24.28 and $37.94. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
