FinOps Developer

The FinOps team helps the organization understand, manage, and optimize cloud and vendor-based consumption across AWS, GCP, and related platforms. The team partners with Engineering, Finance, and vendor owners to improve cost visibility, strengthen accountability, and ensure cloud resources are used efficiently and within budget or contractual limits.

  1. Cloud Cost
    - Monitor expenditure
    - Ensure cloud costs are within budget
    - Alert on anomalies or new costs
    - Forecast cloud spend
  2. Cost Optimization
    - CUDs and/or reservations in services where available
    - Review team consumption of services and provide suggestions/improvements to cut costs. Provide hands on help if needed.
    - Investigate new technologies/tools from vendors to improve existing applications
  3. Reporting
    - Build reports for Finance
    - Build reports for teams
    - Setup alerts and monitor on all consumption/quota based vendors
    - Ensure all services and applications are consistently tagged to assist in reporting
  4. Cost Enforcement
    - Reach out to high consumptions teams as it relates to waste, errors, or lack of understanding of services to cut or remove "wasteful" spend
    - Enforce minimum requirement to tag/label applications and service in order to have a consistent language to be able to report on
    - Adjust consumption of quota based vendors to ensure contract limits are not breached.

In this role, the person will spend time creating and reviewing dashboards, analyzing usage trends, following up on unusual spend changes, helping engineering teams understand the cost impact of their services, and improving the accuracy of cost allocation through consistent tagging and reporting. They will also support forecasting, maintain alerts and reports, and work with teams to identify practical opportunities to reduce waste or avoid exceeding quota and contract limits.

Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of cloud architecture and infrastructure services.
  • Experience managing Kubernetes clusters.
  • Development background, including experience scripting or building tools to automate reporting, alerting, or cloud operations workflows.
  • Experience using infrastructure as code tools, such as Terraform, to manage cloud resources consistently and repeatably.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud cost management or FinOps practices.
  • Familiarity with AWS Cost Explorer, GCP Billing, BigQuery, Grafana, or other reporting and observability tools.
  • Experience building dashboards, reports, or automated alerts for technical and financial stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain cloud cost drivers to engineering teams, Finance, and leadership.
  • Experience with tagging or labeling strategies, chargeback or showback models, and cloud governance standards.
  • Familiarity with vendor quota management, contracts, reservations, committed use discounts, or savings plans.

The ideal candidate is analytical, proactive, and comfortable working across engineering and finance. They should be able to investigate ambiguous cost changes, ask good questions, communicate findings clearly, and follow through with teams until waste or reporting gaps are resolved. This role requires someone who can balance technical depth with practical business judgment.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $110,000 and $120,000. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications, and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and, based on the role, may be applicable.
