The Detroit Free Press is seeking a Detroit Tigers beat reporter. We are looking for someone who can break news and produce high-value stories that include context and analysis. The Tigers beat reporter must also have a knack for producing entertaining features and investigative pieces.

The ability to break news is critical, and this reporter must be able to develop strong sourcing. This reporter will develop content that takes advantage of all delivery forms available to us, including social media, podcast, video, television and online. This reporter will become the go-to brand for all things Tigers, providing thought-provoking analysis, exclusive insight and engaging with the community directly to deliver the content they want most.

The position will report to Free Press sports editor Ryan Winn.

Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibilities will focus on coverage of the Detroit Tigers for all platforms.
  • Would also assist in coverage of big events (Final Four, Super Bowl, etc.).
  • Be a curious, assertive and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
  • Harness social media and messaging platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Reddit, as news gathering tools.
  • Optimize stories for target audience groups using SEO and metrics information.
  • Develop a relationship with readers through an engaging personality and exclusive content to become the first stop for all Tigers news and analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least two years of professional journalism experience, with experience on a major beat preferred.
  • An entrepreneurial approach to growing audience and a dedicated following. Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to take photos and record video/audio in the field. Proven ability to host or be a lead analyst on podcasts and videos.
  • Solid news judgment that's guided by experience with audience metrics.
  • Strong sense of journalism ethics and grounding in the basics of media law.
  • Commitment to reporting fairness, compassion, and sensitivity.
  • Dedication to accuracy.
