Building Technician (part-time)

Gannett Publishing Services (GPS)

Peoria, IL

$25.00 per hour

About the role
The Peoria Journal Star is seeking a Building Technician to keep production moving and equipment running at its best. As a Building Technician you will troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a wide range of production equipment-including printing presses, packaging equipment, and conveyors. If you're hands-on, safety-minded, and enjoy solving mechanical challenges under real deadlines, this is a role where your work is seen and valued every day.

Why you'll love this role

  • High-impact work-your repairs directly support daily production.
  • Variety-work across presses, packaging equipment, and conveyors (no two days are the same).
  • Hands-on problem solving-use manuals, technical drawings, and your experience to diagnose issues fast.
  • Team environment-partner with maintenance and production leaders to resolve issues and hit deadlines.

What you'll do

  • Troubleshoot breakdowns and repair production-related equipment quickly and safely.
  • Own your work with limited supervision-complete assigned work orders and essential tasks.
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) to reduce downtime and keep equipment performing reliably.
  • Communicate clearly with maintenance managers, production managers, supervisors, and peers to resolve issues and keep work moving.
  • Create detailed shift reports to document progress, repairs, and open items for the next team.

What we're looking for

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Apprenticeship, military, or vocational education in a mechanical/electrical/electronic field or a combination of education and experience equivalent to 4 years (preferred).
  • 3-5 years of recent maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • Experience in the newsprint industry and with printing equipment (helpful).
  • Basic electricity and electronics (helpful).
  • Safe and professional use of basic hand tools and shop equipment (required): drill motors, drill press, tool post grinders, band saws, etc.
  • Pneumatics, hydraulics, and refrigeration (helpful).
  • Arc and gas welding (helpful).
  • Ability to fabricate and/or modify parts (helpful).

Schedule, safety & physical requirements

  • Demonstrate strong time management and professional work habits; maintain professionalism under deadline pressure.
  • Provide excellent customer service in all circumstances; take initiative and be responsible/self-directed.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work productively with peers under limited supervision.
  • Practice safe work habits, including use of MSDS and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as business needs arise, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Occasional overtime required based on business needs.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in elevated conveyor areas, and lift/carry up to 30 lbs.
