As Senior Software Engineer - Pricing & Underwriting, you will support the build out and maintenance of next generation Optum Rx's core underwriting tools and serve as the technology subject matter expert for these tools. These tools are critical for bid pricing and rebate forecasting and are currently Excel-based. You will translate actuarial and underwriting logic into scalable, cloud-based applications with user-friendly front ends, working closely with underwriters, actuaries, technology, and analytics partners to ensure accuracy, transparency, and usability.

Primary Responsibilities of the Senior Software Engineer - Pricing & Underwriting:

  • Support the redesign and migration of actuarial and pricing tools from Excel into Azure-based applications.
  • Ensure seamless integration of front-end and back-end components to deliver fully functional systems
  • Collaborate with UI/UX designers to create user-friendly interfaces and ensure seamless user experience
  • Develop data access layers and connect to relational and or NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, MongoDB) for data storage retrieval, and manipulation
  • Maintain and support CICD processes using Github Actions to test and build software artifacts
  • Research, evaluate, and deploy new tools, frameworks and patterns to build a sustainable Analytic platform
  • Identify gaps and opportunities for improvement of existing solutions
  • Be innovative in solution design and development to meet the needs of the business
  • Assist in defining product technical architecture
  • Make accurate development effort estimates to assist management in project and resource planning
  • Create prototypes, proof-of-concepts & design and code reviews
  • Collaborate with management, quality assurance, architecture, and other development teams
  • Write technical documentation and participate in production support.

Required Qualifications of the Senior Software Engineer - Pricing & Underwriting:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Proven software development experience
  • Experience in developing applications on at least one major cloud platform (Azure preferred)
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python, Pyspark and SQL
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with business stakeholders to capture requirements

Preferred Qualifications of the Senior Software Engineer - Pricing & Underwriting:

  • Experience with Azure cloud services, APIs, and relational databases
  • Experience working in health informatics or within the healthcare industry or prior experience with Clinical, Claim, and/or Hospital Billing Data Types
  • Hands-on experience with GUI frameworks (React, .NET, or similar)
  • Track record of migrating complex Excel-based tools into enterprise-ready applications
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD, and testing frameworks
  • Ability to manage stakeholder expectations and balance technical and business needs

Soft Skills of the Senior Software Engineer - Pricing & Underwriting:

  • Quantitative mindset and ability to understand complex processes
  • Ability to own solution delivery with strong organizational, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Works effectively in cross-functional teams to achieve shared goals
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
  • Applies a detail-oriented approach to ensure data integrity and flawless execution
  • Comfortable managing large volumes of data from disparate sources, with the ability to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the analysis
