About the Role
We are hiring a Manager, Software Engineering to lead the Engineering Data Team, a group responsible for building and operating critical data pipelines, internal platforms, and reporting tools that support engineering, product operations, and leadership decision-making across UKG.
The manager will be both people leader and technical leader, with hands-on responsibility for shaping technical direction, reviewing designs and architecture, and actively participating in code and pull request reviews while driving execution against a defined roadmap. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating in an environment with high ownership, shared infrastructure, and complex stakeholder integrations, and can progressively grow from execution-focused delivery to stronger stakeholder partnership and demand shaping.
This role requires a technically strong manager who can engage directly with stakeholders to define metrics and reporting needs, translate them into data and pipeline changes, and lead a team that leverages modern tools - including AI - to deliver high-impact outcomes efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Delivery Leadership
• Own the technical direction and delivery of Engineering Data team's applications, data pipelines, APIs, and BI reporting solutions.
• Review and approve architecture designs, UX/UI designs, technical proposals, and pull requests, ensuring high standards for usability, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Partner with engineers to improve system quality, operational health, and performance, with a strong focus on reducing KTLO overhead.
• Champion the use of AI-assisted development and analytics tools to improve engineering productivity, accelerate delivery, and reduce operational overhead across the team.
• Ensure the team maintains ownership of shared applications and tools built on common infrastructure.
Execution & Outcomes
• Drive measurable outcomes across the team's core priorities:
o Reduce time spent on KTLO through improved tooling, automation, and architectural improvements.
o Build and evolve dashboards for developer productivity metrics, enabling data-driven insights for engineering leadership.
o Enhance and extend the Engineering Roster, improving usability, reliability, and integration with downstream systems.
o Rebuild and scale team capacity, including onboarding, knowledge transfer, and role clarity.
o Lead the end-to-end reporting lifecycle - working with stakeholders to define meaningful metrics, determining required data sources and transformations, and driving changes to data pipelines, models, and tooling to support accurate and reliable reporting.
• Plan and deliver work through sprints with predictable execution, balancing new feature development with operational commitments.
People Management & Team Health
• Manage, coach, and develop a growing team of data and software engineers.
• Set clear expectations around roles, ownership, and technical standards.
• Support skill development across data engineering, web applications, APIs, and BI/reporting capabilities.
• Coach and enable engineers to effectively use AI tools for development, analysis, testing, and documentation, establishing best practices and guardrails to ensure quality and security.
• Create an environment that promotes accountability, continuous improvement, and sustainable delivery.
Stakeholder Collaboration
• Partner immediately with stakeholders across Engineering, Product Operations, and Leadership to understand reporting needs, define success metrics, and translate business questions into actionable data and dashboards.
• Over time, evolve from execution partner to trusted advisor, influencing prioritization, scope decisions, and data strategy based on stakeholder needs and system constraints.
• Help stakeholders clarify problems, evaluate tradeoffs, and determine which enhancements should - and should not - be built.
• Represent the Engineering Data team in planning, prioritization, and technical discussions.
Technologies & Domains You'll Work With
• Programming & Frameworks: Python and JavaScript with strong object-oriented programming fundamentals, REST APIs, and modern web frameworks
• Nice to Have: Experience with d3.js for custom web-based data visualizations and reporting
• Data & Platforms: Data pipelines, ETL, BI reporting, dashboards, and strong SQL expertise for data analysis, modeling, and reporting
