Staff Software Engineer
The Developer Platform is a foundational layer supporting thousands of services across a global technology organization. You will lead multi-year efforts to reimagine how engineers write, test, and deploy backend services at massive, cross-functional scale.
The work requires deep technical expertise as well as leadership in environments shaped by legacy systems, evolving priorities, and cross-organizational dependencies. This role offers broad organizational influence and the opportunity to shape the everyday experience of thousands of engineers.
While we're particularly interested in candidates with deep experience in strong experience in building developer tools and infra while championing Dev Ex (Developer Experience) to drive the agentic SDLC transformation shaping the way how features are shipped with highest velocity and quality
Basic Qualifications:
1. 10+ years of progressive experience in backend, platform, or infrastructure engineering roles within high-scale technology environments.
2. Demonstrated experience operating at a Staff or Senior Staff or Principal Engineer level, providing technical leadership across multiple teams or domains.
3. Deep hands-on experience building and operating distributed backend systems at scale.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Proven track record of designing, implementing, and scaling developer-facing platforms, internal tooling, or foundational CI/CD infrastructure used by large engineering populations
2. Proven industry engagement, such as contributions to open-source tooling or frameworks, or experience collaborating with external partners on shared technical direction.
3. Direct experience with large-scale build systems (e.g., Bazel or similar monorepo tooling) and dependency management at scale.
4. Familiarity with data-intensive workflows and distributed systems, or experience building SDKs and internal libraries for other engineering teams.
5. Demonstrated comfort leading complex, ambiguous initiatives that require balancing long-term architectural vision with urgent execution needs.
What will candidate do:
1. Define and drive the agentic SDLC vision shaping how all builders at Uber should build features
2. Lead and implement modernization initiatives across multiple orgs to improve developer productivity, reliability, and scalability within large shared-code or monorepo environments.
3. Establish technical standards, governance, and consistency by aligning platform direction horizontally across hundreds of engineering teams and multiple geographic locations.
4. Balance hands-on technical execution (e.g., platform upgrades, automation, dependency management) with strategic architectural thinking, ensuring near-term stability while building toward a long-term vision.
5. Serve as a technical mentor and leader, elevating engineering craft and decision-making for Staff and Senior Staff engineers within the Developer Platform organization.
