Software Engineer, Fulfillment Foundations

The goal of the Fulfillment org is to provide a unified platform for all business verticals at Uber to develop their trip fulfillment flow and seamlessly integrate pricing, matching, dynamics and other marketplace capabilities into their product. At its core, the Fulfillment org is responsible for orchestrating and maintaining real-time state of all ongoing trips for Uber. We directly support Uber Rides, Uber Eats, Uber Freight and many more experimental products as the primary realtime platform at Uber. Fulfillment Foundations team builds, maintains and optimizes the foundational services/frameworks on top of which the Uber's core trip fulfillment platform is built. Some of the critical services/frameworks that this team develops and supports are: Google Cloud Spanner, Entity State Chart Framework, Fulfillment Indexing/Search platform, Fulfillment Events Platform, Developer Frameworks in Java/Go, etc. The platforms and frameworks that this team owns are used by 100s of engineers across the company. At peak, our platforms handle millions of requests per second. In the coming years, this team will be innovating in core platforms to support new advanced business use cases such as multimodal trip flows and 3rd party and autonomous drivers. This includes optimizing/building highly scalable realtime databases, advanced indexing/searching platform and next-gen events/metrics platform.

About The Role

  • Work with a best-in-class distributed system at the heart of Uber, building and expanding our core backend systems to enable new features and support key product launches across Uber's global business.
  • Realize vision - Take ownership of a broad problem, drive alignment on how to tackle and deliver highly leverage-able solutions.
  • Demonstrate tech expertise to go very deep or broad in solving classes of problems or creating broadly leverage-able solutions.
  • Execute large scale projects, building mission-critical distributed systems.
  • Be a role model on acting with good judgment and responsibility. Deal with difference in opinions in a mature and fair way, helping teams to commit and move forward
  • Raise the bar on sustainable engineering by improving standard methodologies, producing best-in-class code, documentation, testing, and monitoring.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent practical experience
  • 2+ years of experience developing and shipping code for production systems
  • 2+ years of experience in systems software engineering. Sound understanding of computer architecture and CS fundamentals
  • Proficient in one of the following programming languages: Java or Golang or other equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Computer Science or related field.
  • Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm design, problem-solving, and complexity analysis.
  • Experience with storage systems, serving at scale with high reliability and low latency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents.
  • Passionate about helping teams grow by inspiring and mentoring engineers.
  • Obsessed with System Efficiency and have a platform attitude.
  • Can collaborate well with product engineering teams to articulate requirements and system design.
  • Experience with very large data processing pipelines, and data integrations.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$167,000 per year - USD$185,500 per year.
