Today Amsterdam, Netherlands

About the Role

Uber is changing the world, and the Uber Legal Team is proud to be part of that. We're looking to hire an exceptional attorney with expertise in European payments and financial services to join the Uber Legal Team.

In the EU, Uber operates its payments infrastructure through a licensed electronic money institution. As Senior Counsel, Payments EU, you will be the EU Payments team's first point of contact to help them navigate the EU financial regulatory landscape and advise on new products and partnerships. The role is based in Uber's EMEA head office in Amsterdam and will report to the Head of Payments Legal Europe.

What You'll Do

  1. You will work with colleagues from Uber's legal, commercial, product, and operations teams responsible for Uber's payments and financial services ecosystem, helping to set strategy and provide legal leadership across the EU region.
  2. You will be a key advisor to business leadership regionally on legal risks and opportunities, payments and fintech/regtech innovations, development of financial services regulations, consumer protection themes, AML, KYC, sanctions, and other areas where the law meets the business.
  3. You will proactively monitor and advise the business on current and new financial services regulations and card scheme rules that could impact Uber's business model and growth.
  4. You will be involved in the design, planning and launch of new and exciting product developments and business initiatives across the region and internationally, including fintech services and partnerships.
  5. You will negotiate commercial agreements with payment processors, banks, fintech partners and payments-related support vendors.
  6. You will manage outside counsel regionally, including budget planning and monitoring with the aim to ensure that the company receives cost effective legal advice.

Basic Qualifications
  1. An enthusiastic, team player with a passion for how technology can influence peoples' lives responsibly and within the law.
  2. A minimum of 8 years experience with preference for a mix of in-house and law firm background.
  3. Strong financial regulatory background, including knowledge of the laws and regulations that regulate payments and other types of regulated financial services in the EU and experience dealing with government agencies and regulators in this field.
  4. Qualified attorney and Member of Bar Association or otherwise eligible to practice as In-House Counsel.
  5. Possess excellent business judgment, communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. Enthusiastic about Uber!

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience advising regulated payment entities and supporting payments compliance programs (ie. AML/CTF, sanctions, client due diligence).
  2. Understanding of legal principles applicable to payments and risk, including the payments ecosystem (e.g., the role of acquiring and issuing banks, card networks, payment processors, gateways, risk vendors, etc.), regulatory implications (e.g., stored value, money transmission and other payments, cross-border and international regulatory issues) and consumer protection laws.
  3. Knowledge of major payment network rules and processes and experience dealing with acquirers and/or major payment networks.

Uber's mission is to reimagine the way the world moves for the better. Here, bold ideas create real-world impact, challenges drive growth, and speed fuelds progress. What moves us, moves the world - let's move it forward, together.
