Senior Applications Developer - Atlassian
About the Role
Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. The problems are complex, the systems are massive, and the pace is fast. You'll need to make smart decisions with imperfect information - and own them. If you think in systems, stay calm under pressure, and care about building things that actually work - this is where you'll grow.
In this role, you aren't just managing a tool; you are the architect of the digital workflows that power Uber. You will lead the technical development and optimization of our Atlassian platform (Jira, Confluence, and the broader ecosystem) for a massive enterprise deployment of over 50,000 users. This isn't about following a corporate playbook-it's about navigating the messiness of shifting priorities and legacy complexity to build scalable, automated solutions that keep our teams moving. We're looking for someone with the grit to own platform reliability end-to-end and the curiosity to pioneer AI-enabled improvements like Rovo Agents. If you thrive on taking ownership of high-stakes systems and turning ambiguity into technical clarity, you'll fit right in.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain Atlassian systems that directly support how our internal teams move-where performance, reliability, and scale at a 50K+ user level cannot be separated.
- Solve messy, high-impact workflow problems in a fast-changing environment, often without a clear starting point, by configuring and optimizing Jira/Confluence workflows, schemes, and permissions.
- Navigate technical debt and legacy configurations while building modern automations and integrations using Atlassian REST/GraphQL APIs.
- Lead the \"messy\" work of AI-enabled workflow improvements, architecting Rovo Agents to automate complex processes and connect disparate data sources.
- Own your work end-to-end: from drafting the first design doc for a new ScriptRunner solution to debugging critical production issues when stakes are high.

- Collaborate across disciplines-partnering with Business Analysts and stakeholders to translate raw requirements into durable technical solutions while communicating trade-offs clearly.
- Champion engineering best practices like code health and standardization, even when pressure is high and time is tight.
- Unblock teams by providing high-level escalation support and root-cause analysis to ensure the Atlassian toolchain remains performant and governed.
Basic Qualifications
- 8+ years of hands-on experience administering and developing solutions on Atlassian platforms (Jira and Confluence Cloud/Data Center).
- Proficiency in Jira workflows, custom fields, schemes, permissions, and advanced configurations.
- Experience with ScriptRunner for automation and workflow enhancement.
- Experience working with Atlassian REST and GraphQL APIs for third-party integrations.
- Experience with Atlassian marketplace apps (Structure, JEMH, EazyBI).
- Demonstrated use of AI-powered developer tools in a daily engineering workflow (e.g., AI-assisted coding or debugging).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience extending major Marketplace platforms like ScriptRunner or Structure.
- Hands-on experience with prompt engineering or agent-based architectures (e.g., Atlassian Rovo).
- Systems thinking mindset with experience operating applications at enterprise scale under strict security and compliance requirements.
- A \"go-get-it\" attitude with a track record of mentoring senior engineers and leading technical initiatives across teams.
