About the Role

  • Uber Direct is one of Uber's fastest growing and most exciting marketplace bets, providing restaurants, grocers and retailers access to the same logistics and technical capabilities powering the Uber Eats product. We're looking for a Director with past expertise in the logistics domain to lead the engineering organization building the experiences, systems and models powering the entire Uber Direct product & business.

    The teams within this organization create products across a wide range of domains, undertaking efforts such as extending Uber's logistics capabilities to warehouse & same day deliveries, unlocking external API access to Uber's full logistics capabilities, optimizing auction model performance, and creating new, innovative opportunities for Earners.

What You'll Do

  • Build the long term vision and provide technical leadership, while influencing and partnering with your team to architect, design and build the next great logistics platform that can stand the test of scale and availability, while reducing operational overhead
  • Strategize and collaborate closely with Product, Data Science and Engineering teams throughout the company to drive and shape the technical direction, product vision and roadmap
  • Balance the team's portfolio across table stakes logistics capabilities and risky, bold bets which open up new verticals & potential future business lines
  • Build a strong engineering brand for Uber Direct and attract, mentor and develop the talent in the team
  • Build trust and foster a collaborative team culture and help grow the respective leaders on the team
  • Have an excellent executive presence to communicate the team's vision/plan effectively and represent the Uber Direct engineering organization and POV in the overall Delivery+ group
  • Build an influential culture of engineering excellence maintaining the balance and right tradeoff for building products for speed and tech debt
  • Develop an operational model to achieve operational excellence for Product metrics and Engineering metrics

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 10 years proven experience building software across the stack (mobile, platform, data pipelining and ML) and significant experience working on marketplace problems and distributed systems for large scale products
  • Proven experience in designing, building, and managing large-scale realtime systems with high availability to support millions of users and/or high call volume.
  • A minimum of 7 years of management experience leading software engineering teams
  • Previous experience leading engineering and cross-functional teams operating in the logistics domain, whether it be middle mile, last mile, fulfillment, marketplace optimization, or other adjacent industries
  • Obsession with the science of logistics combined with a passion for the real, physical details of building a global logistics networks that impacts millions of customers across all 3 sides of the marketplace

For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$302,000 per year - USD$336,000 per year.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$302,000 per year - USD$336,000 per year.

For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$302,000 per year - USD$336,000 per year.
