About the Role
As a Counsel in our Tokyo office, you will be a key driver of Uber's strategic growth, managing complex regulatory, commercial, and litigation matters for our Mobility and Delivery businesses in Japan. You will serve as a high-impact adviser, navigating a fast-paced legal landscape to provide innovative solutions that shape our business operations in one of Uber's most critical global priority markets. By balancing legal risk with sustainable growth, you will have the unique opportunity to lead transformative projects that contribute to the evolution of Japanese society and help move the world toward a better place.
This position is based in Tokyo and reports to our Senior Counsel (Bengoshi) based in Japan. You will join a dedicated Japan Legal Team currently composed of three Japanese lawyers (Bengoshi) and one paralegal, working within our broader and diverse APAC Legal structure.
[Hybrid Work Policy] The Japan Legal Team currently maintains a flexible working style. Under our current policy, office attendance is required two days per week (Wednesday and Thursday). Please note that this is expected to transition to three days per week starting from the second half of 2027.
Your Impact in Role
- Strategic Advisory:Serve as a trusted adviser to senior business stakeholders in Japan, providing nuanced legal support on high-priority initiatives for the Mobility and Delivery business, empowering them to take calculated, smart risks.
- Commercial Leadership:Draft and lead negotiations for key strategic contracts and partnerships that are fundamental to Uber's market expansion and operational sustainability.
- Product & Regulatory Navigation:Provide sophisticated product counseling and interpret current regulations to ensure ongoing compliance while refining business models in a dynamic legal environment.
- Dispute Management:Independently manage and advise on diverse legal proceedings and disputes, ensuring the business is protected across various practice areas.
- Compliance & Education:Conduct deep-dive risk evaluations and lead internal legal education programs to foster a culture of compliance and legal awareness across both legal and non-legal teams.
What You Will Need
- Experience: Extensive post-qualification experience as a Japan-qualified lawyer (Bengoshi) within a top-tier law firm or a fast-paced multinational corporation.
- Languages:Native-level proficiency in Japanese and a high level of business English (written and spoken) to effectively manage local stakeholders and global legal counterparts.
- Core Skills:Proven track record of managing a broad range of legal issues independently, including complex regulatory advisory, strategic commercial negotiations, and high-stakes litigation.
- Communication & EQ:Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a high level of emotional intelligence to navigate complex internal and external relationships.
- Adaptability & Execution:Proven ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and re-prioritize quickly to address shifting business needs; demonstrated ability to thrive in high-impact and high-profile situations.
- Specialized Expertise: Experience in competition law or navigating evolving regulatory frameworks for tech platforms is preferred.
- Leadership & Influence: Demonstrated ability to manage senior stakeholders and operate effectively within a complex, matrixed organizational environment is preferred.
- Strategic Thinking & Precision:Exceptional analytical skills and mature judgment, combining a highly motivated and creative mindset with a laser-focused approach to details to ensure robust risk mitigation and "two steps ahead" problem-solving.
- Adaptability:A self-starter who thrives in high-profile situations and can rapidly re-prioritize multiple complex projects to meet shifting business needs.
