Job Description

Join the Programming Systems Group at Uber for a 12-week research internship where academic theory meets industrial scale. You will be embedded in a team of specialists to tackle bold, unsolved problems in computer science. As a PhD intern, you will own a research project from ideation to implementation, with the explicit goal of bridging the gap between novel research and production impact.

About the Team

The Programming Systems Group accelerates performance, reliability, and developer productivity across Uber's massive tech stack (Go, Java, Swift, Kotlin, TypeScript, and Python). We operate at the intersection of innovation and core infrastructure. Our team actively contributes to the research community by open-sourcing our tools and publishing at premier conferences.

Our recent Work/Publications Includes:

  • GenAI and Program Synthesis: Dr.Fix, FixrLeak, uReview, and FlakyGurard (sigsoft distinguished paper)
  • Static Analysis: NullAway, NilAway, Last Diff Analyzer, Piranha
  • Dynamic Analysis: CRISP, ErrorScope, GOLF (upstreamed to Go), and DataraceSpy
  • Optimization and Infrastructure: Swift protocol specialization (upstreamed to swift), LeakProf, PGO in Go (upstreamed to Go), and CI@Scale

What You'll Do

  • Lead Novel Research: Drive an ambitious, end-to-end research project under the supervision of an experienced mentor
  • Innovate at Scale: Develop static analyses, compiler optimizations, or AI-driven tools that improve reliability, efficiency, and productivity for thousands of developers
  • Publish & Share: Publish your work at top-tier conferences and contribute to our open-source ecosystem
  • Collaborate: Work closely with engineers and leaders to validate your research against real-world production data

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Candidates must have at least one semester/quarter of their education left following the internship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with compiler optimization, static or dynamic analysis, distributed systems, performance analysis tools, and GenAI
  • Solid understanding of modern program analysis techniques
  • Excellent coding skills and software design skills
  • Actively submitting papers to top conferences and journals
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business partners
  • Experience in simplifying/converting business challenges into technical problems
  • Research mentality with a bias towards action to structure a project from idea to experimentation to prototype to implementation
  • Experience presenting at top-tier conferences
