Who we're looking for

Toyota's Safety Department is looking for a passionate and motivated Senior Safety Engineer within the Strategy & Planning group.

The primary responsibility of this role is to manage projects related to Electrification (Lithium-ion Battery) Implementation across North America. The primary area of focus will include monitoring activity across multiple stakeholder groups to ensure adherence to the electrification readiness plan.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead Obeya collaboration activity with cross-functional groups for electrification projects, coordinating information from regional and site stakeholders regarding lithium-ion preparedness activities
  • Provide support to Toyota Motor North America as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in electrification-safety related items
  • Interpretation and implementation of federal, state, and local safety regulations related to lithium-ion batteries
  • Update and maintain Toyota technical safety standards related to lithium-ion battery safety
  • Develop regional implementation plans and strategies for lithium-ion safety program deployment
  • Present battery safety strategies and project status updates to leadership and executives
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Ability to travel up to 25% domestic with possible international travel as needed

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the following: Engineering or Occupational Safety & Health, or a related engineering technology field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience directly developing, implementing, and managing safety programs or minimum of 5 years in a role where safety responsibilities made up at least 50% of the professional duties
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of lithium-ion battery safety related functions with comprehensive knowledge of OSHA, DOT, NFPA, IEEE, UL, ANSI, ASTM, IFC, and other applicable industry standards
  • Demonstrate experience managing projects requiring critical thinking (kaizen), problem solving, data analysis, and verification
  • Strong experience independently developing and delivering presentations, generating effective reports and dashboards, conducting applicable standards research

  • Ability to generate business plans and strategies appropriate to the work assigned at the business unit level

Added bonus if you have

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or a related engineering field
  • Experience performing DC/lithium-ion battery electrical hazards risk assessments and engineering studies (DC Arc Flash Studies)
  • Experience implementing safety through hierarchy of controls and design principles
  • Deep knowledge and experience in Manufacturing Process Development, Equipment Design, Industrial Controls, Control of Hazardous Energy (CoHE), Machine Risk Assessment, Safety Systems, Verification & Validation, etc.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Lithium-Ion battery design and new electrification technologies
  • Experience working in automotive manufacturing or engineering environments
