Who we're looking for

Toyota's Powertrain Design Electrification (PDE) department is looking for a passionate, highly motivated Design Engineer with an interest in designing and releasing EV Charging systems and HEMS (Home Energy Management System). HEMS products consist of Uni- directional charger, Bi-Directional Charger (BDC), V2H (Vehicle to home) unit, V2G (vehicle to grid) unit, and inverter. The primary role and responsibilities will include:

  • Benchmark and learn the current EV charging and HEMS products in the market.
  • Understand and learn the design and safety requirements for EV charging and HEMS products.
  • Develop an understanding of CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Compliance), regulatory and compliance requirements (IEC, SAE, UL).
  • Design and develop specifications for HEMS products with Toyota key safety requirements.
  • Coordinate all related development activities including milestone management, schedule negotiation, cost analysis (with purchasing, suppliers and accessory division), validation and product launch, leading the problem-resolution of technical issues.
  • Partner with design engineers in Japan and local suppliers to design and develop EV charging and HEMS products.
  • Participate in design, evaluation, and manufacturing activities at the event location locally and internationally (as necessary).
  • Report weekly status to upper management and to related departments as needed per project needs.

What you'll be doing

  • Creating, modifying and studying power electronics design (Chargers, V2H, V2G, Inverters etc.) with suppliers, vehicle integration, affiliates and Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan).
  • Defining specifications, performing design and packaging studies, solving technical problems, issuing drawings, and interacting with stakeholders in a fast-paced multicultural work environment.
  • Creating design proposals and studies using CATIA V5.
  • Using your knowledge of the Toyota Design Process and Standards, create typical design team deliverables such as 3D models, 2D drawings, technical reports, and instruction sheets.
  • Working with style parts and negotiating design details with style department (i.e. CALTY).
  • Attending routine Design Reviews and reporting key design metrics such as durability, performance, cost, and mass versus targets.
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders (such as accessory department, business development, Z (program management group), TMC, Powertrain design, purchasing and Suppliers.
  • Benchmarking similar designs to ensure competitiveness.
  • Training in the Toyota Way.
  • Communicating effectively with management and key stakeholders.

What you bring

  • 3+ years in power electronics product design and release.
  • Bachelor of Science (or above) with an Engineering Major in Mechanical / Electrical.
  • Experience using CAD/CAE (CATIA V5). Demonstrable strong understanding of electrical circuits and GD&T.
  • A working knowledge of DRBFM, DFMEA, FTA and LT-SPICE.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping and testing.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with suppliers, affiliates and Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan).
  • Highly motivated self-starting working style to manage and own leadership of projects.
  • General understanding and application of standard engineering theory, principles and problem solving.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally by up to 20%.

Addded bonus if you have

  • Demonstrated understanding of CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Compliance), regulatory and compliance requirements (IEC, SAE, UL)
