Backend Software Engineer - TikTok Privacy & Security, Online Infra

Responsibilities

As a part of TikTok Privacy & Security group, the mission of the Online Infra team is to ensure responsible data practices across TikTok and meet privacy commitments made to regulators and end-users in online system. The team provides solutions for privacy management in data lifecycle, including data collection and sharing, purpose limitation, data understanding etc.

We are dealing with an ecosystem that includes tens of thousands of online services and databases in global data centers, managing billions of users' data worldwide. To meet our commitment, we are building a world-class privacy aware infrastructure that spans all data lifecycle stages across various online environments, including API gateways, micro-services, storages, and message queues. Furthermore, we are developing data understanding services to support data governance projects in an event-driven manner.

As a software engineer, you will be engaged in designing solutions for protecting TikTok user's data with cutting-edge techniques. Your primary focus will be building globalized services and platforms to ensure that user data is well protected while empowering our business.

Key Responsibilities:
• Design and build services to protect user data with privacy design by default.
• Be responsible for the system design and functionality development of the privacy engineering frameworks and platforms.
• Work on anonymization/pseudonymization/encryption technologies to preserve user privacy in data processing activities.
• Work closely with PM and cross-functional teams to address technical challenges when applying solutions throughout our product suite.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
• Comprehensive understanding of computer principles, familiarity with general server architecture, competent in the use of various data structures and algorithms, and proficiency in at least one programming language.
• Excellent understanding of business scenarios and requirements, with experience in designing rational technical solutions.
• Solid communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree or above with 2 years of software engineering experience.
• Rich experience in Internet product architecture design.
• Experience in designing and delivering large-scale distributed systems with high performance and stability.
• Experience in implementing privacy by design and default principles in backend systems.
• Experience of privacy awareness process design for SDLC, especially data collection, processing and sharing.
• Experience of data processing control solutions like purpose limitation, access control etc.
• Experience of data protection solutions like data classification, data de-identification etc.
• Experience with data governance framework to register, manage, and control data lifecycle to meet privacy compliance requirements.

The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $136800 - $259200 annually.

Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
