We're conducting advanced research to apply modern, state-of-the-art techniques to deliver the most accurate and comprehensive search for legal and professional information.

About the Role

As an Applied Scientist, you will:

  • Innovate: Design end-to-end AI solutions using information retrieval techniques, prompting workflows, and robust training/evaluation methodologies to optimize model performance and impact.
  • Build & Deliver: Develop, test, and deploy live production systems in collaboration with engineering, ensuring well-managed software delivery and reliability at scale.
  • Work Autonomously & With a Team: Solve problems in a self-directed manner while contributing effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Make Sound Technical Choices: Independently determine appropriate data, modeling approaches, and evaluation strategies for NLP and IR problems.
  • Communicate & Align: Engage stakeholders to deeply understand business problems and domains, shaping objectives and goals that align AI technologies with product needs.
  • Operationalize ML: Understand and inform MLOps processes for monitoring, evaluation, and retraining to maintain high-quality models in production.
  • Advance the Field: Publish at top venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ACL, EMNLP, SIGIR) and contribute to patents to keep our solutions cutting-edge and competitive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the design and delivery of AI capabilities that enhance Thomson Reuters' products and align with business objectives.
  • Build and optimize models for NLP and IR applications, including transformer-based and LLM-driven approaches.
  • Develop prompting workflows and evaluation designs to ensure reliability, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner closely with Engineering and Product to translate complex challenges into scalable, production-ready solutions.
  • Define metrics and run experiments for model monitoring, evaluation, and retraining.

About You

  • PhD in Computer Science, AI, or a related field, or a Master's with equivalent research/industry experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience building and deploying deep learning models for NLP or IR applications.
  • Expertise in large language models (LLMs).
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python) and experience with modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Proven ability to translate complex problems into innovative AI applications.
  • Publications at relevant venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, or KDD.

Technical Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of classic ML techniques used for NLP problems.
  • Solid understanding of deep learning approaches for NLP and IR (e.g., transformer-based models).
  • Working understanding of the inner workings of large language models.
  • Experience with text-heavy NLP projects.
  • Practical experience with generative AI technologies (prompt engineering, in-context learning, chain-of-thought, prompt optimization, auto-evaluation, function calling, controlled generation, etc.).
  • Practical experience with RAG frameworks, pre-training/fine-tuning language models, and data curation/generation for training and fine-tuning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work on search and question answering over large corpora and/or long-document summarization.
  • Experience building applications for the legal domain (e.g., document review, document drafting).
  • Publications at relevant venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, ICML, KDD, or similar conferences and venues.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations.
Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $125,000 - $232,100.
For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $108,500 - $201,500.
This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
