Senior Producer, Opinions
Join the future of news
We're on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you'll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.
About Our Team
The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.
Why This Role Matters
The Washington Post Opinions section is seeking a senior video producer to be an editorial leader for a new slate of journalism-driven podcasts and YouTube franchises. This producer will help build and grow multiple weekly shows - shaping their run of show, developing each host's on-air personality, and architecting the editorial and creative identity behind them.
This position focuses on franchise building across one to three recurring podcasts in the political and cultural space. The producer will think deeply about tone, pacing, format, community building and the broader "universe" around each show - building engaged fandoms and helping talent craft durable, differentiated voices.
The ideal candidate will understand the creator economy, the social-audio/podcast landscape, and how audiences form attachment to personalities. They should be able to marry sharp editorial instincts with digital-native thinking, and be fluent in how news, politics, and culture travel across platforms and shape the zeitgeist. They will be format-fluid: able to produce a weekly podcast, build short companion clips, craft episodic arcs, and create a consistent ecosystem around each show.
This is an opportunity to work with talented journalists to build franchises from the ground up, reaching highly engaged audiences across America.
What Motivates You
- You have an experimental spirit and want to find new ways of connecting audiences to opinion journalism.
- You love building shows, not just episodes-crafting tone, format, and personality.
- You are excited to work at the nexus of journalism, culture, and digital media.
- You thrive in small, high-output teams.
- You are comfortable in fast-moving environments and on deadline.
- You enjoy coaching and collaborating with hosts and contributors.
- You get satisfaction from cultivating community and growing a loyal listener/viewer base.
- Build run-of-show documents for weekly podcasts and companion YouTube videos in collaboration with on-air hosts.
- Shape the creative direction, episode flow, and voice of each show, ensuring consistency across franchises.
- Source and organize show elements (B-roll, SOTs, graphics) to elevate storytelling.
- Book guests, manage outreach, and conduct pre-interviews that enrich weekly conversations.
- Oversee tapings and guide editorial flow, pacing, and on-air performance.
- Maintain direct communication with talent throughout production.
- Shape titles, thumbnails, descriptions and packaging for each weekly release.
- Bake clipping and promotional opportunities into the show structure for maximum post-episode value.
- Partner with social producers to create short-form companion content across Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube Shorts.
- Collaborate with Audience, Growth, Client Solutions and other teams to build community, deepen engagement and grow fandom around each franchise.
- Monitor audience reaction, listenership trends and community feedback to refine editorial direction and format over time.
- Ensure YouTube and podcast backend hygiene, manage RSS workflows, and uphold high production standards.
- 5+ years of experience in digital or media content, including 3+ years in podcasts or creator-driven shows.
- Previous experience working closely with on-screen or on-mic talent; ability to help shape voice, tone, and persona.
- Familiarity with the news-podcast and commentary landscape across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Patreon, and Spotify/Apple Podcasts.
- Strong editorial instincts and comfort navigating both political and cultural topics.
- Proficiency with Google Docs, Sheets, and newsroom CMS tools.
- Experience using Slack or other team communication platforms.
- Hands-on editing skills - familiarity with Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop, or ability to collaborate deeply with editors.
- Strong writing skills for titles, descriptions, episode synopses, and on-screen text.
- Knowledge of YouTube Studio and social platform analytics tools; experience with RSS backends such as Megaphone or Spotify for Creators.
- Experience booking guests, conducting pre-interviews, and preparing hosts editorially.
- Comfort with both creative development and operational execution.
