About the Internship

The Tunnels, Bridges & Terminals Department (TB&T) serves the nation's most populous and economically dynamic region, connecting the New York Metropolitan area to the rest of the country. To keep the region moving, TB&T manages four bridges (George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge, and Outerbridge Crossing) two tunnels across the Hudson River (Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel), and two bus facilities (Midtown Bus Terminal and George Washington Bridge Bus Station). Within the TB&T department the Roadside Tolling unit provides a variety of functions which includes oversight, operational and maintenance of the E-ZPass toll collection system.

This intern will have the opportunity to work hands-on in supporting projects by providing system performance monitoring analysis and oversight of the Port Authority all Electronic Tolling System using state of the art technologies. This will provide the candidate with real-world experience in learning how the various components contribute to the overall field and back-office operations of the system to ensure that revenue collection is not impacted. The candidate will also experience first-hand the operational cohesiveness between the various departments and management teams that oversee the overall operation. What is unique about this Internship assignment is that it will provide the candidate with lasting practical experience by increasing their analytical, technical, communication and problem-solving skills which can be applied to any future endeavors.

Responsibilities

  • Support the continued maintenance of the toll system, which collects approximately $2 Billion annually.
  • Review toll collection data and procedures.
  • Identify processes for resolving errors in handling violations and in system performance and recommend solutions for mitigating them in the future.
  • Report on performance monitoring and analyzing data for possible system issues that will require escalation for resolution.
  • Review image capture and quality and system performance.
  • Monitor component performance, identify components in need of replacement and verify spare inventory utilization.
  • Collaborate on efforts to increase revenues via Toll Technology by performing various system audits to identify issues and generate reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
  • Major in Data Science/Analytics, Computer Science, Operations, Transportation, or related discipline

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience in summarizing results of analyses.
  • PC proficiency with experience in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel.
  • Strong research, analytical and organization skills.
  • Ability to gather data, perform process analysis, and provide recommendations.
  • Strong time-management skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated productivity in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of toll systems and/or Backoffice operations is a plus.

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
