About the Internship

The Port Authority's airports, ports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, bus terminals and rail transportation systems are important transportation links in the region. The electrical engineering design group provides engineering design services and prepares preliminary and final documents for innovative planning, design, construction and operation of the most critical electrical and electronics assets within the Port Authority (PA) facilities. The electrical engineering group is part of a multi-discipline group of engineers and other design professionals that form the Engineering Department of the Agency.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical investigations and design calculations;
  • Assist engineering staff in preparation of contract drawings using AutoCAD/Revit MEP and technical specifications;
  • Assist engineering staff in preparation of construction cost estimates;
  • Assist engineering staff in preparation and development of design criteria, budgets and schedules;
  • Assist engineering staff in review and approval of contractor submittals for ongoing electrical construction projects;
  • Familiarize with the application of latest electrical codes and standards

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
  • Major in Electrical Engineering

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to analyze problems and formulate solutions.
  • Familiarity in the utilization of AutoCAD software in preparing drawings
  • Proficient in the use of software applications, such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working environment.
  • Exhibit positive attitude of taking independent initiatives, creative problem-solving, eagerness to learn, while remaining dedicated to teamwork
  • Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills will be critical for successful completion of tasks

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
