About the Internship
The Aviation Department is looking for a Data Science intern to join the Data Analytics & Business Intelligence Unit! The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the world's busiest airport system - John F. Kennedy International (JFK), Newark Liberty International (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA), Stewart International (SWF) and Teterboro (TEB) airports. The mission of the Aviation department is to plan, develop, provide, promote, operate and maintain a unified system of safe and secure regional airport facilities, providing the region with unsurpassed global access and restoring the region to its preeminent status as the nation's gateway for passengers and cargo, and to do so with sensitivity for the community and the environment.
The Data Analytics and Business Intelligence (DABI) team is the dedicated data science unit for the entire aviation department. We oversee a centralized database - the Aviation Data Analytics Warehouse, (ADAW) - and provide analytical and reporting tools to our various stakeholders to promote data-driven decision making and to promote a robust airport governance model for more accountability, transparency, efficient airport operations and seamless customer experience. We are looking for a solution-oriented creative problem solver to join our team. Learn how the Port Authority "keeps the region moving" using data to inform its decisions.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with subject matter experts in the department and perform root cause analyses of consistent problems and offer a strategy for solutions
- Assist data scientists to build and assess statistical models, machine learning models, and/or predictive algorithms
- Perform data analyses to identify discrepancies, anomalies, and data quality issues as well as automate quality control measures
- Explore and research emerging technologies and industry best practices to improve existing processes
- Develop, revise and expand data documentation and user guides for our datasets and dashboards

Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
- Major in Data Analytics/Science, Computer Science, Math/Statistics, quantitative social sciences or related discipline
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with Python and SQL desired
- Experience with Microsoft Azure, Power BI, Databricks, Jupyter, and/or other similar tools desired but not required
- Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
- Interest in public service and/or transportation
- Willingness to learn
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Internship Details
- The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
- The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026
- This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
- In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits
- The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
