About the Internship

The Office of Continuous Improvement is looking for interns to join their team! Our mission is to drive performance at the Port Authority through continuous improvement with departments across the agency to dramatically improve processes and meet internal and external customer expectations. The department's priorities include working with stakeholders to identify and implement process improvements, thereby enhancing the customer experience, building a culture that fosters innovation, collaboration and accountability, and institutionalizing a continuous improvement mindset and practices. This internship will provide the opportunity to get involved with departments across the agency, work cross-functionally, and get exposure to working with collaborative teams and facilitating conversations with diverse groups of stakeholders. It will also stretch data analytic skills and will enable you to be at the forefront of novel technologies and innovations the Port Authority is seeking to implement.

Responsibilities

  • Support the identification, development, implementation, and tracking of continuous improvement initiatives across multiple Port Authority departments and facilities
    • Past intern projects have included: design and implementation of customer experience surveys, data dashboard development, and facilitating strategy development sessions
  • Support and co-lead workshop sessions with project teams to gather feedback, understand root causes within the data, and solicit project solution ideas
  • Collect, analyze, and present data related to continuous improvement, generative AI, and customer experience initiatives
  • Develop resources and training materials to share continuous improvement methodologies with employees
  • Prepare reports or presentation based on findings from data analyses, customer surveys, and/or stakeholder workshops.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
  • Major in Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, Data Analytics, or related discipline
  • Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in: contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region; public service; and/or transportation
  • Willingness to learn
  • Self-starter with excellent communication, analytical, technical, and written/oral communications skills
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and visualize data using Excel, Power BI, or similar programs
  • Familiarity with workflow or process automation tools such as Power Automate
  • Experience and interest in one or more of the following areas:
    • Process improvement (e.g., Agile, Lean, Scrum)
    • Change management
    • Data analytics
    • Design thinking / user experience
    • Generative AI

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
