About the Role

The Social Media Specialist is instrumental in helping the Port Authority leverage social media to bring to life its focus on a 21st century customer-centric experience, through compelling, high-quality content creation and strategic storytelling on social media channels. This is an exciting opportunity to help enhance the reputation and the visibility of the agency's work across digital platforms, especially for our Aviation line of business, championing LaGuardia, Newark and JFK airports, which are going through an unprecedented, historic transformation into world-class gateways.

Social Media Specialist should be a seasoned social media marketer with strong experience as a content creator (writing, graphics, and video production), with working knowledge of social customer service and crisis communications; familiarity with social paid media planning and buying is a plus.

Responsibilities

Lead Functions:

  • Content Development and Execution: The Social Media Specialist will be a primary developer of content, either solo or with the PA Studio team, freelancers, or our ad agency.
  • Monitoring Social Feeds: The Social Media Specialist, in partnership with customer engagement/service disciplines, will monitor audience activity and surface insights that inform content and communications.

Support Functions:

  • Strategy: The Social Media Specialist will support the Supervisor in the development and execution of social media strategies, including the overarching social media playbook and campaigns.
  • Industry Knowledge: The Social Media Specialist will stay plugged into emerging social trends and identify opportunities to activate cultural moments and viral trends, as well as stay up to date on new platform functionality, and share their findings with internal teams.
  • Reporting: The Social Media Specialist will support the Analytics Manager in any reporting needs.
  • Customer Engagement: The Social Media Specialist will be a resource for customer engagement colleagues and will provide guidance to service line partners, customer engagement, operations, and media relations on effective social media responses when needed.
  • Paid Social Media Planning and Buying: The Social Media Specialist will support in the execution of paid social media campaigns by placing buys.
  • Participating in site visits and events: the Social Media Specialist will be required to regularly attend airport visits and other events, to capture or produce content in real time.
  • Administration: The Social Media Specialist will support the Social Media Supervisor with the administration of the team; this includes but is not limited to maintaining a content calendar and status sheet. The Social Media Specialist will work with the Social Media Supervisor to assess and prioritize project requests from service line departments and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related fields from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 5years of experience working in social media content development and digital marketing, at an ad agency or in-house.
  • In lieu of a degree, 7-10 years of experience in social media content development and digital marketing, at an ad agency or in-house or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated expertise in motion graphics and short-form video production, particularly using Adobe Creative Cloud (After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop), with the ability to design static graphics and culturally relevant social content (including memes), and familiarity with tools such as CapCut, Canva, and similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled content creation tools (e.g., ChatGPT or similar platforms)
  • Experience with social publishing and listening platforms (e.g. Hootsuite)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience buying media on Meta Business Manager.
  • Excellent writing skills for public-facing communications.
  • Experience in aviation, transportation, infrastructure, or government sectors.
  • Experience developing multimedia content optimized for multiple social media platforms.
  • Knowledge of social media analytics, metrics, and performance measurement.

NOTE:

May be required to work outside normal business hours periodically to support content capture, priority communications, customer engagement and other urgent agency needs.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey anticipates that the actual salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on aspects such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal factors. The expected compensation range for this role is:

Minimum: $100,256 Midpoint: $130,318 Maximum: $160,394

In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits employees to work remotely a maximum of one day per week, subject to operational and business needs.
