Are you ready to make a lasting impact on the infrastructure that moves millions? At the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, we're seeking a motivated Environmental Engineer to join our Civil & Environmental Engineering unit, a team positioned within the Engineering/Architecture Design Division. This group supports planning and design for a wide range of transportation assets, including airports, ports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, rail systems, and bus terminals. This position is located at 4 World Trade Center in NYC.
As an Environmental Engineer, you'll play a vital role in delivering engineering design and environmental compliance support services for projects ranging from routine to moderately complex. You'll work on a variety of environmental engineering areas, including:
- Hazardous material survey, sampling, and abatement design
- New Jersey and New York site remediation program oversight
- Facility environmental compliance support for NJPDES/NY-SPDES permit compliance, stormwater BMPs, SWPPP reviews, field audits and inspections, air permitting and reporting, underground and above-ground storage tanks, SPCC plans, and other areas as required.
- Stormwater soil erosion and sediment control design and associated permits and field inspections.
Your responsibilities will include preparing technical reports, engineering drawings, cost estimates, technical specifications, supporting environmental compliance requirements including obtaining environmental permits and approvals for facility operations, and creating design documentation using AutoCAD. You'll also act as the technical lead on assigned projects, collaborating closely with internal teams and coordinating with external agencies at the federal, state, and local levels.
We're seeking a candidate who brings some practical experience and working knowledge of environmental remediation in NY/NJ, NJDEP / NYSDEC stormwater regulations, experience in design and/or on construction projects and field sampling and auditing experience.
Responsibilities
- Produce quality design services conforming to applicable design standards/guidelines and codes.
- Prepare contract documents consisting of drawings, technical specifications, construction cost estimates.
- Produce biddable and constructible contract drawings in AutoCAD.
- Perform site inspections at the Agency's facilities.
- Audit consultant engineering studies, designs and contract documents for construction projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college or university.
- Minimum of four (4) years of professional engineering experience in design and or environmental compliance and regulatory oversight including any of the following: New Jersey/New York remediation projects, experience with regulatory agencies including EPA, NYS DEC, NJDEP, OSHA, and familiarity with the NYSDOL and AHERA requirements for asbestos abatement.
- Working knowledge in AutoCAD and ArcGIS
- Must possess a valid driver's license

Desired Qualifications
- EIT Certification and/or on path to obtain PE license in the future.
- Working knowledge of guidelines and standards, but not limited to NYSDEC/NJDEP regulations, NEPA/SEQR.
- Demonstrated experience in problem solving, decision making, negotiations, and conflict resolution skills to effectively reach sound conclusions and recommendations.
- Proven ability to lead, manage, and prioritize multiple assignments with multiple disciplines.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize as required.
- Proficiency in preparing contract documents, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Excellent presentation and written communication skills.
- Proficient in the use of software applications Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey anticipates that the actual salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on aspects such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal factors. The expected compensation range for this role is:
Minimum: $80,444 Midpoint: $104,573 Maximum: $128,700
In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits employees to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In-person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business, and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required on business needs.
