At the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, we are seeking a motivated Electrical Engineer to join our Electrical Engineering unit, a team positioned within the Engineering/Architecture Design Division. This group supports planning and design for a wide range of transportation assets, including airports, ports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, rail systems, and bus terminals. The electrical design group provides engineering design services and prepares preliminary and final documents for innovative planning, design, construction, and operation of the most critical electrical and electronics assets within the Port Authority facilities. This position is located at 4 World Trade Center in NYC.
Engineer, Electrical will be responsible for the preparation of electrical engineering design documents, including studies, contract drawings, technical specifications and construction cost estimates; evaluation of project scopes; development of design criteria, budget and schedules; and audit engineering designs performed by consultants
We are seeking a candidate who brings some practical experience and working knowledge of electrical engineering design.
Responsibilities
- Prepare preliminary and detailed estimates, design criteria for new construction of electrical projects and designs for the alteration of existing structures and utility systems. Review criteria including tolerances, dimensions, shapes and sizes, and determines the properties required in materials and feasible construction methods.
- Development of preliminary conceptual design work and planning for Capital Projects and Major Work Programs. Provide the Client Department with design alternatives and associated costs, for future planning and funding of projects.
- Preparation of Contract Documents consisting of drawings, technical specifications, construction cost estimates, and purchase orders. Produce biddable and constructible Contract Documents to meet the requirements of the Client Department within time schedules and budgets.
- Perform engineering design, including technical analyses and associated economic studies and make recommendations. Ensure technical integrity, safety, efficient operation, maintainability and sound economics of the projects.
- Coordinate projects with other design disciplines, Line Department facilities and outside entities (manufacturer's representatives, utilities consulting engineers and contractors). Minimize disruption of normal facility operations.
- Maintain knowledge of State-of-the-Art technology and equipment such as power distribution systems, microprocessor-based control systems, computed assisted design (CAD), specialized systems such as Lighting, Fire, Security, UPS, variable speed drives, fiber optic network, etc.
- Prepare design documents in accordance with the most advanced technology available in compliance with Code and PA Design guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university
- A minimum of four (4) years' experience in professional engineering work with primary experience in electrical systems design and specification writing for commercial and industrial facilities.
- Experience designing electrical systems, including low voltage power distribution systems and lighting systems; preparing electrical calculations such as equipment sizing, short circuit, voltage drop, load studies, etc.; preparing contract drawings; coordinating of technical specifications with contract drawings and preparation of construction cost estimates.
- Working knowledge in AutoCAD
- Must possess a valid driver's license
Desired Qualifications
- EIT Certification and/or on path to obtain PE license in the future.
- Working knowledge of guidelines and standards, but not limited to NYSDEC/NJDEP regulations, NEPA/SEQR.
- Demonstrated experience in problem solving, decision making, negotiations, and conflict resolution skills to effectively reach sound conclusions and recommendations.
- Proven ability to lead, manage, and prioritize multiple assignments with multiple disciplines.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize as required.
- Proficiency in preparing contract documents, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Excellent presentation and written communication skills.
- Proficient in the use of software applications Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey anticipates that the actual salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on aspects such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal factors. The expected compensation range for this role is:
Minimum: $93,340 Midpoint: $121,356 Maximum: $149,370
In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits employees to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In-person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business, and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required on business needs.
