Los Angeles Dodgers Reporter
The Los Angeles Times is seeking a baseball writer to cover the Los Angeles Dodgers. The ideal candidate will bring a deep knowledge and passion for baseball and fresh ideas on how to bring enterprise to a grueling, daily beat. The reporter must contribute to a wide range of storytelling platforms and be open to learning new digital skills as they emerge.
The candidate is expected to produce clear, detailed reporting on tight deadlines, cultivate a wide network of sources inside and outside the Dodgers organization to inform that reporting and have excellent organizational skills. Fluency in Spanish or Japanese is not mandatory, but it will enhance any candidacy.
The journalist is also expected to have a curiosity and track record with multimedia reporting that includes, but is not limited to, video and audio reporting and extensive use of social media. The reporter will be asked to pursue other avenues of baseball reporting, using their reportorial tools - investigative skills, a nose for the next trend and a knack for extracting illuminating exchanges from subjects - to keep Los Angeles Times readers aware of a team and league that are essential to Southern California readers and sports fans.

We are seeking an innovative and creative journalist with a wide-ranging storytelling background that includes, but is not limited to, beat writing experience, longform feature writing and multimedia storytelling. A background in reporting complex stories, such as investigative pieces, is not mandatory but a plus.
A curiosity and comfort with the full breadth of Dodgers-related and Dodgers-adjacent stories, written and told for a Los Angeles audience, is an expectation.
You will be working closely with editors to generate ambitious ideas and experiment with storytelling forms that go beyond the printed word to The Times' video, audio and social platforms. The Sports team is a close-knit and collaborative one; your ability to be a team player is crucial.
Responsibilities:
- Report and write stories across the beat, with an ability to turn around game stories, breaking news, explanatory stories, news features, analysis and, when appropriate, investigations
- Demonstrate an ability and willingness to cover subject matter outside one's knowledge or comfort zone
- Identify unique angles that will advance a story beyond what other outlets have already reported
- Write engaging headlines that are lively and conversational in tone (when appropriate) with a digital, diverse audience in mind
- Respect and meet tight deadlines that will include brisk turnarounds
- Work with fellow writers, editors, audience engagement staff and other reporters to achieve department and organizational goals
Requirements:
- At least 10 years of journalism experience
- Distinctive and engaging writing voice
- Proven ability to write on tight deadlines
- Ability to communicate on multiple platforms (TV, radio, podcast, video, social media)
- Commitment to communicating well with editors and a wide range of colleagues who contribute regularly to Dodgers coverage
- Commitment to producing innovative multimedia storytelling
- Superior news judgment and knowledge of taste and legal consideration
- An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes positive collaboration
- An understanding of the importance of accuracy and precision
- Comfortable appearing on outside media on behalf of the L.A. Times
This position is listed as Reporter in the Los Angeles Times Guild. It will be based in Los Angeles and regularly will require attendance at L.A.-area games as well as team meetings at The Times' El Segundo, Calif., office. Work on weekends, nights and holidays will be required. Regular travel is expected. Reporters must have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle in good working condition, with suitable auto insurance coverage.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume, cover letter and applicable clips to Assistant Managing Editor for Sports Iliana Limón Romero at the apply link. In that cover letter, applicants should detail how they'd structure the beat and what types of stories and projects they would pursue.
