The Assistant Director, Digital Marketing provides leadership and strategic direction for Personal Lines digital marketing to drive new business at an acceptable return on investment. This role is accountable for maximizing the impact of the marketing budget by prioritizing strategies and tactics that deliver the strongest results.
In partnership with analytics, creative, and cross-functional teams, the Assistant Director oversees the development and optimization of paid digital campaigns. Responsibilities include budget and performance management, vendor partnerships, measurement and forecasting, process improvement, and creative and testing strategy. The ideal candidate brings deep digital marketing expertise across channels (e.g., display, retargeting, programmatic, paid social, and test-and-learn environments), with a strong balance of hands-on execution and data-driven strategic leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead the display marketing program, including campaign creation, trafficking, optimization, testing strategy, and performance monitoring
- Leverage data and insights to optimize campaign performance and build a robust pipeline of testing opportunities
- Monitor results in partnership with analytics, identifying trends, opportunities, and delivering accurate forecasts
- Identify and implement innovative strategies to increase growth and/or reduce acquisition costs
- Design and maintain processes, tools, and documentation to support accurate planning, forecasting, and performance tracking
- Manage key vendor relationships to ensure strong communication, strategic alignment, and high-quality execution
- Own a $4-6MM annual display and digital media budget, including forecasting, allocation, optimization, and expense management
- Develop and present clear, compelling materials that communicate results, insights, and strategy to diverse audiences
- Lead cross-channel initiatives that advance Personal Lines marketing priorities and capabilities, influencing peers and stakeholders to drive outcomes
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a marketing role
- Expert knowledge of direct-to-consumer marketing, including targeting and segmentation, modeling, economic drivers, creative testing, and results analysis
- Proven ability to develop strategy through critical thinking (diagnosis, guiding policy, and coherent action) and execute against a plan
- Experience with A/B and multivariate testing to inform optimization and recommendations
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency with tools such as Excel
- Highly organized, detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to manage internal and external resources effectively
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, and matrixed environment
- Tactical expertise across direct marketing disciplines, including media buying, planning, creative development, channel optimization, and performance management
- Strong understanding of industry trends, competitive dynamics, and their impact on program growth
- Deep experience with marketing planning, budgeting, and project management
- Results-driven and metrics-oriented, with strong influencing and collaboration skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
This role will offer a hybrid work schedule with a mix of days working in the office and from home.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$104,800 - $157,200
