We are hiring for an Outside Claim Representative in Chicago, Hartford, NYC, Philadelphia, or Washington DC.
The Outside claims Representative (OCR) provides property damage expertise to support first-party personal and business property claims through The Hartford's One Property model, including field, local territory, virtual, and catastrophe response work.
Success in this role requires strong ownership, customer focus, and the ability to partner effectively with Inside Claim Representatives, customers, vendors, and contractors to deliver timely, accurate claim resolution. Candidates must be willing and able to deploy in response to catastrophe events and changing business needs, including extended deployments that may last multiple consecutive weeks.
Claim File Management & Customer Service:
- Proactively manage assigned property claims from inspection through damage resolution.
- Perform residential and business property inspections (field, virtual, local territory, or catastrophe deployment) and evaluate damages.
- Review claim information, policy details, endorsements, deductibles, prior damage, photos, imagery and other documentation to prepare for inspection and damage evaluation.
- Prepare accurate estimates, document findings, manage supplements, and issue payments when appropriate.
- Own damage-related activity and supplements when appropriate, while applying judgment to resolve light-touch items efficiently and avoid unnecessary handoffs.
- Partner with Inside Claim Representatives to support clear ownership, effective handoffs, compliance needs, customer communications and overall claim resolution.
- Utilize approved vendors and resources to support quality outcomes, customer service, and expense management.
- Maintain flexibility to support local territory work, catastrophe response, and changing business needs.
Business Acumen & Technical Expertise:
- Apply property claim expertise, construction knowledge, estimating skills, and Xactimate proficiency to assess damages and determine scope.
- Exercise sound judgment and critical thinking when evaluating damages, reviewing documentation, coordinating inspections and resolving customer or contractor questions.
- Serve as a property damage resource across Personal Insurance, Business Insurance and Catastrophe Claim Operations.
- Communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively in both written and verbal interactions.
- Leverage AI-powered tools to improve claims handling efficiency, enhance quality and consistency, support decision-making, and identify opportunities for process improvement while adhering to company and regulatory requirements.

- Foster a customer-centric, team-oriented culture aligned with The Hartford's values.
- Build effective relationships with customers, claim partners, vendors, contractors and leadership.
- Demonstrate an "own it" mindset by driving resolution, making informed decisions and appropriately escalating issues.
- Represent The Hartford with professionalism, empathy, and credibility, building customer confidence and trust throughout the claim journey.
Qualifications:
- College degree and/or relevant work experience.
- Experience in property claims, construction, field adjusting, estimating, catastrophe response or Xactimate preferred.
- Strong customer service, communication, negotiation, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, make sound decisions, and handle challenging conversations with professionalism and empathy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; ability to learn and leverage new technologies and tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a customer-focused and collaborative approach.
- Availability for nationwide catastrophe operations as necessary, including deployments typically lasting 10-14 days, with extended deployments possible based on business needs and event severity.
- Licensing: Must obtain maintain required Property & Casualty Adjuster licenses. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of applicable licensing exams within 30 business days from the completion of licensing training.
- Maintain a valid driver's license and driving record that meets company and insurance requirements for the operation of company vehicle.

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$65,636 - $98,453
