The Managing Director, Wholesale Professional Liability will provide strategic and operational leadership for The Hartford's Wholesale Professional Liability portfolio, with primary responsibility for Design Professional (A&E), Accountants Professional, and Miscellaneous Professional Liability products. This role as a Managing Director will be responsible for driving profitable growth, underwriting discipline, and strong wholesale broker and MGA partnerships across the East Coast and Midwest, with national broker engagement inclusive of the West Coast.
This role leads and develops a team of experienced underwriters and serves as a key representative of The Hartford within the wholesale broker and MGA marketplace, partnering closely with Distribution, Product, Actuarial, Claims, and other internal stakeholders to execute strategy and deliver results.
This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office at either our New York City, NY, Morristown, NJ, Hartford, CT, Charlotte, NC or Dallas, TX 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Key Responsibilities:
Wholesale Distribution & Market Leadership
- Lead and strengthen relationships with Wholesale Brokers and Managing General Agents (MGAs) that distribute The Hartford's Professional Liability products.
- Serve as a senior market-facing leader, representing The Hartford in the wholesale marketplace through broker meetings, strategy sessions, and industry engagement.
- Drive new business production, retention, and portfolio expansion through targeted wholesale distribution strategies aligned with risk appetite.
- Partner closely with Distribution leadership to identify growth opportunities, optimize broker engagement models, and expand market presence.

- Own the underwriting performance of the Wholesale Professional Liability portfolio, with accountability for profitability, growth, retention, and risk quality.
- Establish and execute underwriting strategies for Design Professional (A&E), Accountants Professional, and Miscellaneous Professional Liability lines.
- Ensure consistent underwriting discipline, adherence to authority levels, and alignment with The Hartford's underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Collaborate with Product and Actuarial partners to support pricing strategy, product enhancements, coverage development, and portfolio optimization.
- Monitor portfolio performance, trends, and emerging risks, using data and analytics to inform strategic decisions.
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a geographically dispersed team of underwriters supporting wholesale brokers nationally.
- Set clear performance expectations and provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and development to build a high-performing underwriting organization.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Support succession planning and talent development initiatives within Wholesale Professional Liability.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner with Claims, Legal, Compliance, and Operations to ensure effective risk management and high-quality customer and broker experience.
- Collaborate with Marketing and Distribution on broker-facing initiatives, positioning, and thought leadership.
- Serve as a key internal subject matter expert on Wholesale Professional Liability trends, competitive dynamics, and market conditions.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of progressive underwriting experience in Professional Liability, Financial Lines, or Specialty Insurance.
- 5+ years of leadership experience required.
- Demonstrated experience underwriting or leading portfolios within Design Professional (A&E), Accountants Professional, and/or Miscellaneous Professional Liability.
- Proven leadership experience managing and developing underwriting teams.
- Deep understanding of wholesale broker and MGA distribution models.
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage portfolio profitability and growth.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Preferred:
- Prior experience in a senior underwriting leadership role (Managing Director, AVP, Director, or equivalent).
- Experience working with geographically distributed teams and national broker relationships.
- Advanced degree or professional designations (e.g., CPCU, RPLU) a plus.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$144,000 - $216,000
