The Managing Attorney will lead and manage the legal team in Maryland for The Hartford. The Managing Attorney provides leadership of the staff counsel and support staff, builds and maintains partnering relationships with staff and with Claim Centers, provides oversight and guidance on case handling, and assists with cases as needed. The Managing Attorney is a key player in driving the strategy of partnering with the Claim Centers to provide excellent results to clients, and in building and maintaining the firm's reputation of excellence in the local legal community.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and direct all legal operations and staff within the Maryland office, including hiring, training, and performance management.
- Provide strategic legal advice and representation to The Hartford in complex insurance defense litigation, including personal injury, property damage, and workers' compensation.
- May assist in overseeing a caseload of litigated files, including developing legal strategies, conducting discovery, preparing pleadings, motions, and briefs, and representing the company in court, arbitrations, and mediations.
- Ensure timely and cost-effective resolution of legal matters while adhering to company guidelines and ethical standards.
- Collaborate with claims adjusters, internal business partners, and external counsel to achieve favorable outcomes for the company.
- Monitor and analyze legal trends, legislative changes, and regulatory developments impacting the insurance industry in Maryland.
- Develop and implement best practices for legal operations, case management, and litigation strategies.
- Manage office budget and resources effectively.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that promotes professional growth and development.
- Participate in roundtables.
- Gather, compile, and analyze data and statistics from multiple sources for preparation of monthly reports.
- Administers performance management process for professional and support staff.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active and in good standing membership with the Maryland Bar.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in insurance defense litigation, with a strong emphasis on personal injury, property, and/or complex coverage matters. Workers' compensation experience a plus.
- Proven experience in a leadership or management role within a law firm or corporate legal department.
- Exceptional trial advocacy, negotiation, and mediation skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized with great attention to detail required. Experience analyzing data and able to derive value-added business insights from this analysis.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in legal research software and case management systems.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel; advanced Excel skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to adopt and leverage emerging legal technology and advanced digital tools to improve efficiency and work quality.
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical conduct and professional integrity.
- Willing and able to travel as required, up to 10% of the time.

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$167,200 - $250,800
