The Hartford is seeking a Managing Attorney for the Chicago Staff Legal Office. This position maintains and grows the presence for Legal Counsel for The Hartford in the local community. This position provides leadership of the staff counsel office, builds and maintains partnering relationships with staff and with Claim Centers, provides oversight and guidance on case handling at the local level, and manages a personal caseload. This role is a key player in driving the strategy of partnering with the Claim Centers to provide excellent results to clients, and in building and maintaining the firm's reputation of excellence in the local legal community. This individual will lead a large and well-established team of 38 legal professionals handling several lines of business across 4 states. The office leadership team will be comprised of the managing attorney, an assistant managing attorney and an office team leader
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute appropriate uniform office systems concerning the receipt and timely assignment of files; timely and meaningful communications with clients, claims, opposing counsel and the court; the identification, maintenance and storage of open files and, the closing and storing of closed files.
- Ensure that proper conflicts check and calendar systems are in place.
- Create, revise and ensure the use of uniform legal and administrative forms.
- Conduct suit analyses and frequent reviews of staff law office files.
- Develop partnership between office and claim centers. Provide high quality service and timely information to claims.
- Participate in roundtables.
- Gather, compile and analyze data and statistics from multiple sources to identify trends and for preparation of monthly reports.
- Prepare and administer office budget.
- Identify issues that raise broad client, claim or corporate implications.
- Administers performance management process for professional and support staff. (Results expected, on-going feedback, evaluation, development, rewards/consequences)
- Assume proactive, leading role in requisite training of staff on legal issues and goals.
- Recruit, hire, develop and retain outstanding legal staff and support staff.
- Foster an inclusive and high performing culture.
- Promote an inclusive and team-oriented work environment among all office and remote staff.
- Identify top talent; focus on development and "re-recruiting".
- Provide high quality legal representation to clients.

Qualifications:
- 10+ years' law practice and business management experience in a large corporate environment.
- 5+ years of direct leadership experience.
- Strong preference in candidates have both law practice and corporate experience.
- Member in good standing of all state and federal bars where attorney has been admitted
- Strong litigation background to include experience and proficiency in commercial and general liability, subrogation, auto liability matters, and complex litigation. Workers' Compensation experience is a plus.
- Functional understanding of claims and litigation.
- Trial experience preferably in the field of insurance defense (jury and bench trials).
- Demonstrated leadership ability and a successful track record managing a team.
- Ability to influence and communicate across all levels of the organization.
- Strong communication and computer skills.
- Strong leadership experience.
- Strategic thinking and analytical skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Co-Pilot and Excel.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$172,000 - $258,000
