Bi-Weekly Salary: $3443.14

This position reports to the DCR Materials Testing Lab, 164 Pond Street, Stoneham

Please note, if you are selected for this position and will be working less than 90 days, the position will automatically revert to a short-term position.

Position Overview:

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Long-Term Seasonal Laboratory Supervisor I to enable the Division of Design and Engineering (D&E) to properly ensure quality work by Contractors in the field and at the plants. This program includes maintenance and repairs for existing buildings, dams, bridges, roadways, fields, site features and furnishings as well as field renovations and construction. This position will report to the Director of Testing Services for the DCR Lab.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Build and maintain recreational facilities and infrastructure to improve visitor experience statewide. DCR's Field Construction and Materials Testing Lab within the Division of Design and Engineering (D&E) oversees an annual recreation and infrastructure system. A large portion of this work includes assisting and supporting Resident and Regional Engineers in their construction and maintenance functions. This department conducts field oversite and material testing in the lab and field to help produce quality parks and infrastructure for the general public.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Anticipated tasks and responsibilities include:

Contract/Contractor Management

  • Review and confirm Scopes of Work prior to the start of work
  • Work with project and Contractor work schedules
  • Monitor Contractor personal during the making and testing of products use on the job
  • Perform field observation of Contract work
  • Report on any problems in the field

Program Coordination

  • Visit field or plants on the Project List and collect samples as required
  • Conduct condition assessments for existing roads and parking lots
  • Update DCR Lab paperwork and files as required.
  • Make recommendations about sites in need of maintenance, repairs, renovations, etc.
  • Directs the performance of numerous tests both in the Lab and field of a variety of construction materials, such as concrete, HMA, soils, aggregate and masonry
  • Provide reports on project work accomplished

New Maintenance & Repair Projects

  • Review specifications and make suggestions as required
  • Test materials and write reports as required
  • Recommend products and procedures to produce a project
  • Other related and miscellaneous duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ACI Field Testing Tech. Grade 1
  • Have or have had ACI Concrete Tech. Level 1
  • Have or have had ACI Concrete Strength Testing Tech.
  • Have or have NETTCP HMA Plant Inspector
  • Experience with field work for general site work
  • Experience overseeing and providing instruction to Contractors in the field and lab
  • Ability to work well with others and communicate regularly with supervisor
  • Ability to self-manage and work efficiently
  • Ability to spend several days per week in the field if needed

About the Division of Design and Engineering:

Continuing over a century of visionary land stewardship, DCR's Division of Design & Engineering (D&E) collaborates with colleagues within DCR, other agencies, and communities across the state to plan, design, build, and maintain a diversity of outdoor recreational experiences and unique landscapes throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, our staff is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure including dams, seawalls, parkways and park roads, sidewalks and trails, and stormwater systems. This requires employing a diverse range of talent including architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, tradespeople as well as business, finance and administrative support who work together to support D&E's mission. Our staff is unified by a passion for providing access to high quality public open space and outdoor recreation for all ages and abilities, and strive to improve visitor experience, enhance universal accessibility, and help modernize DCR's facilities and resources to be more carbon neutral, energy independent, and resilient to climate change.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in chemistry, biology, histology, bacteriology, microbiology, biochemistry or medical laboratory technology, the major duties of which included laboratory analysis and the interpretation of laboratory results and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in chemistry, biology, histology, bacteriology, microbiology or medical laboratory technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the require (A) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

NOTE: No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
