Rehabilitation Counselor (D), Treatment Area Supervisor
Job Description
Tewksbury Hospital operated by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a dynamic rehabilitation counselor to provide leadership and support in designing, developing, implementing and evaluating rehabilitation and recovery services , especially in the areas of peer support and education, advocacy, and vocational services.
The selected candidate will develop services and opportunities that promote continuity of care, community integration and ensure recovery facilitating environment utilizing a person-centered approach when providing rehab services in accordance with JCAHO.
Please Note: This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday- Friday 8:00am-4:30pm, Days off: Saturday/Sunday
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
• Provides leadership, services and support for rehabilitation and recovery by fostering and implementing SAMSHA's 10 fundamental components of recovery model.
• Develop services and opportunities that promote continuity of care, community integration and ensure a recovery facilitating environment.
• Provides direct supervision to direct reporting Rehabilitation Dept. staff in D Basement Supervised Treatment Area.
• Assist in covering the functions of the Director of Rehabilitation Services when required.
• Promote teamwork by demonstrating flexibility, the ability to listen to the views of others, to compromise, to handle conflict and stay focused on a positive outcome.
• Functions as the chief Moderator of the D Basement Supervised Treatment area, Functions as the chief moderator of the D Basement Supervised Treatment Area monitoring the physical plant of the area. Also maintains the safety of all individuals in the D Basement Supervised Treatment Area, while following established policies and procedures.
• Oversees the daily operations of the D Basement Supervised Treatment Area including completing advance staffing plans.
• In conjunction with the Director of Rehabilitation Services, oversees and maintains the budgetary process including allocating monies, compiling a spending schedule and ensuring that it is followed and ordering timelines are met.
• Works with the Director of Rehabilitation Services to modified group schedule on an ongoing basis as needed.
• Plans and leads or co-leads a wide range of groups, activities and events as assigned.
• May transport individuals to and from D Basement Supervised Treatment Area.
• Provides strong leadership and support and supervision to staff, and when needed to address issues which may include performance problems.
• Reports any significant event to supervisor and complete all necessary documentation related to the event.
• Performs other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
• Knowledge of the principles and practice of psychiatric rehabilitation includes the techniques of counseling for psychiatric rehabilitation.
• Familiarity with motivational and reinforcement techniques.
• Understanding of factors, trends, and problems in providing rehabilitation services to clients.
• Skilled in the methods of general report writing.
• Ability to be open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in the workplace.
• Capacity to establish rapport with people from different ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
• Talent for interacting with people who are under physical and emotional stress.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to demonstrate a positive, non-judgmental, and accepting attitude toward individuals with variety of mental health needs and substance use disorder.
• Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
• Proven experience in supervising/guiding staff, coaching, training and development.
• Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint.
• Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

Joint Commission accredited LTAC hospital that provides high quality, comprehensive treatment, care, and comfort to adults with chronic medical and mental illness. Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: At least five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in social work, social casework, vocational counseling, employment counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or educational counseling. Based on assignment to second-level supervisory positions, at least one year of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
- A Bachelor's or higher degree in rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for the required nonsupervisory experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.
- A Bachelor's or higher degree in a major other than rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required nonsupervisory experience on the basis of four years of education for one year of experience.
- A Master's or higher degree in social work, psychology, human services, rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, or counseling may be substituted for an additional year of the required nonsupervisory experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.
- Licensure as a Licensed Rehabilitation Counselor by the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health Professionals or Certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification may be substituted for three years of the required non-supervisory experience.
- No substitution will be permitted for the required supervisory experience.
- One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
