Job Description

Taunton State Hospital is seeking a qualified candidate for the Painter II position. The selected candidate will supervise, assist, and participate in the preparation of paint surfaces, and applies paint, varnish, wallpaper, and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces; inspect buildings, furniture, and other fixtures to determine the need and advisability for painting and the amounts and type of finish to use; and perform related work as required.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week. The incumbent will work on the first shift from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Days off are Sunday and Saturday. *Position will support all sites in the Southeast Area.

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Supervises and participates in the preparation of surfaces and in the application of paints, wallpaper and other finishes.
  • Assists in preparing surfaces for finishing by washing dusting, sanding, puttying, scraping and other means.
  • Supervises and assists in applying paint, varnish, stain, wallpaper and other finishes to building interiors and exteriors, furniture and other surfaces by means of brush, roller, pad or spray equipment.
  • Mixes and matches paints, stains and blends colors.
  • Supervises and assists men engaged in drywall joint finishing.
  • Supervises and assists in the erection of ladders and scaffolding equipment.
  • Inspects furniture and building interiors and exteriors to determine the need and advisability for painting and the amount and type of finish to use.
  • Estimates the amount of materials needed and the cost for a job.
  • Requisitions the material needed for a job and issues them to workmen.
  • Supervises and assists in the cleaning and proper storage of equipment and supplies and clean-up of the work area.
  • Supervises and assists in the reglazing and replacement of window and door glass.
  • Supervises and assists in the painting of sign standards, signs and the lettering of same.
  • Maintain records of production and materials used on the job.
  • Works with and coordinates work with other trades in the completion of the job.

Required Qualifications:

  • A valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operators License (Class D)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A valid rigger license
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency

About Taunton State Hospital:

Taunton State Hospital (TSH) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a 62-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient services to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model and a part of the Southeast Area which works closely with the inpatient treatment teams to facilitate patients' discharge back to the community.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in painting work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.

Substitution:

I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school at the high school level with a major in painting may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

Special Requirements:

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Rigger's License issued by the Department of Labor and Industries (Division of Industrial Safety) may be required.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
