Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Geospatial AI Engineering Intern with a passion for GIS and artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and spatial data-driven development. You will work alongside our MassDOT's Planning division's GIS Data Engineering team to both develop and improve GIS data and build AI/ML applications and data pipelines using AWS services.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain cross-functional real-world experience in the intersection of GIS and ML/AI.
Duties and Responsibilities
GIS Data Engineering Responsibilities
- Assist in the design, maintenance, update, and transformation of GIS Data on enterprise databases.
- Assist in the publishing of enterprise GIS web services.
- Participate in GIS team reviews, sprint planning, and daily stand-up meetings with cross-functional teams.
- Perform GIS related technical support for agency staff.
- Research emerging GEOAI technology and document how it might be useful to the agency.
AI & Machine Learning Responsibilities
- Develop and fine-tune computer vision models and other AI technology using models like YOLO, or RT-DETR for object detection and/or SAM2 or Mask2Former for image segmentation.
- Assist in the design and deployment of AI/ML-powered applications and intelligent automation workflows.
- Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and daily stand-up meetings with cross-functional teams.
- Research emerging AI/ML techniques and support experimentation and documentation of findings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with ESRI suite software (ArcGIS, Enterprise, Experience Builder).
- Strong intellectual curiosity and capacity for professional growth.
- Perform with a strong sense of urgency.
- Attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- High level of professionalism and focus on quality.
- Familiarity with Python, SQL etc.
- Understanding of AWS cloud technologies.
- Ability to communicate effectively and build consensus with diverse project stakeholders.
- Exposure to Agile development practices is a plus.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office with strong Word and Excel skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills.
