The Department of Conservation and Recreation, seeks applicants for a Civilian Conservation Corps Intern - (Unpaid Internship) to perform the duties listed below on a part-time basis.

This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Interns may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.
General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) has a large collection of buildings, trails, roads, and other recreational features that were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC, a federal New Deal program, made improvements in state and national parks from 1933-1942. DCR is starting to prepare for the CCC centennial celebrations in 2033. Under supervision of the Senior Planner, the intern will review the data developed from the 1998 historic resources survey of CCC resources, and working with other DCR databases and information sources, identify and note updated information on resource status and conditions. The intern will also do research on the CCC resources at the Blue Hills Reservation, located in Quincy, Milton, Canton, and Randolph, as the CCC resources at this property were not captured in the 1998 historic resources survey
Detailed Duties and Responsibilities:
- Updating the CCC resource data, cross walking conditions info from 1998 with more recent conditions evaluations and use status from the DCR Cultural Resources Inventory, Resource Management Plans, and the Commonwealth Asset Management Information System. Requires use of Excel; work will involve updating an existing spreadsheet.
- Undertake background research and documentation of CCC resources in the Blue Hills Reservation, to be utilized by DCR in the preparation of Massachusetts Historical Commission Inventory forms. The Intern will start by reviewing the 1999 Statewide Survey of Civilian Conservation Corps Resources in Massachusetts, to become familiar with the collection of resources elsewhere in the DCR system. This will be followed by research into the CCC work at the Blue Hills, drawing from a combination of secondary sources and primary material available through the DCR archives.
- Products will include: a draft and final bibliography, a draft outline for a historic narrative, followed by a draft and final historic narrative products documenting the work of the CCC in the Blue Hills, and a spreadsheet of all CCC resources constructed in the Blue Hills.
- If time allows, other research as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong writing skills.
- Experience performing historic research using primary and secondary sources.
- Experience working with Excel or Google sheets.
- Interest in New Deal programs.
Additional Information: Access to reliable transportation to and from DCR and non-DCR sites.
