This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Candidates may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.
This internship is designed to support MassDEP's Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (BWSC) ongoing Brownfields efforts with a focus on the Western Massachusetts Environmental Justice (EJ) Communities. The objective of the Brownfield Project is to identify and inventory all pertinent characteristics of underutilized properties that may be candidates for environmental assessment and/or remediation and eligible for State or Federal funding as potential areas for economic growth and development. By identifying these properties and creating an inventory, municipalities and developers can potentially bundle assessment efforts in specific towns or neighborhoods with the greatest need and possibilities for redevelopment.
The Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (BWSC) - Site Management Intern will assist in updating the Western Regional Office (WERO) Brownfields Inventory by researching and compiling information on underutilized or potentially contaminated properties. This project supports community redevelopment and environmental justice efforts across the region.
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Research and collect site information from MassDEP records, municipal files, online sources, and field inspections.
- Use GIS mapping to document and analyze Brownfield sites.
- Coordinate with municipal staff to verify and supplement site data.
- Compile findings into a detailed report or spreadsheet with site descriptions and photographs.
- Support efforts to identify funding opportunities for site assessment and remediation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Mass Driver's License and reliable vehicle.
- Able to work independently.
- Able to collect information and concisely summarize it.
- Familiarity with Word, Windows, MS Access, Microsoft Teams, and Excel applications.
- Knowledge of GIS.
