The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public
Job Description:
The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game seeks a Biodiversity Media Intern to join its passionate, interdisciplinary team. In 2025, Governor Maura Healey set nation-leading Biodiversity Goals for Massachusetts. The plan sets four key goals-Protect, Restore, Sustain, and Connect-each with specific strategies for action for 2030, 2040, and 2050. This ambitious, whole-of-government approach aims to rebuild biodiversity and invest in nature to sustain our health and well-being, food security, economy, and way of life. The Biodiversity Media Intern will work closely with the DFG Communications Director to highlight on-the-ground efforts to protect and restore nature and drive progress towards the goals. They will be expected to work independently identify and pitch ideas, interview staff and external partners, and use photography, video, and graphic design to create compelling digital stories for social media and website use. This position will be self-driven but work closely under the supervision of DFG's Communications Director. The position will be best suited for someone with passion for biodiversity conservation and science communication, strong storytelling skills and writing skills, and comfort working with a diverse community of partners including non-profits, academics, commercial fishing, hunting and fishing groups, and Environmental Justice and Indigenous communities.

Job Duties:
25% - Work independently to research, plan, and pitch ideas that highlight Massachusetts Biodiversity Goals, under guidance of DFG Communications Director. 40% - Travel to various locations across the state for reporting, including conducting interviews with staff and external partners, photo and video, and more. 25% - Writing, editing, and graphic design to produce compelling multimedia stories for social media and website use. 10% - Participate in regular weekly check-ins with supervisor, meetings with EEA/DFG Communications Teams, and participate EEA Internship Program trainings and workshops.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong interest in science communication. Experience in journalism, communications, photography, videography, or digital media. Demonstrated ability to work independently to brainstorm ideas, conduct research and interviews, write, and create compelling photos, videos, and graphics. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud software for photo editing, graphic design, and video editing. Comfortable working in outdoor locations throughout the state, including on the water Willingness to learn and work collaboratively with other.
This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Interns may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.
