ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL

PUBLIC PROTECTION & ADVOCACY BUREAU

GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION UNIT

(Boston or Regional Office)

The Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General is looking for an experienced and highly motivated attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Gun Violence Prevention Unit (GVPU) within the Consumer Protection Division (CPD). This innovative Unit works to reduce gun violence in Massachusetts by enforcing the Commonwealth's gun safety laws and supporting compliance efforts in partnership with law enforcement, other government agencies, and community stakeholders.

Primary Duties: The Assistant Attorney General will work closely with the GVPU Director to advance the Unit's mission, with a primary focus on enforcement-related investigations and litigation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Screening and developing new matters aligned with GVPU enforcement priorities.

• Investigating potential violations of Massachusetts gun laws and related consumer protection or regulatory provisions.

• Building litigation-ready factual records and coordinating evidence-gathering with law enforcement and agency partners.

• Drafting and litigating enforcement matters in state and federal court, including pleadings, motions, discovery, and hearings/trial preparation.

• Negotiating and enforcing settlements and other compliance resolutions, as appropriate.

• Coordinating with internal AGO teams and external partners (including law enforcement agencies, District Attorneys, and relevant state agencies) to advance GVPU enforcement efforts.

• Supporting cross-state and multi-party matters, including multi-state investigations or coordinated actions with other Attorneys General, as appropriate.

• Supporting legislative and policy initiatives, including legal research, analysis, and drafting.

• Engaging with community stakeholders as needed, including through developing and implementing communications strategies.

Position Type: Full-Time/Exempt.

Location: This position may be based in the Boston Office, Springfield Regional Office, Worcester Regional Office, or New Bedford Regional Office. Office location will be determined based on the candidate's expressed preference and space availability. Travel to the Boston Office may be required.

Salary: $87,500 to $130,595, commensurate with JD year.

Qualifications

Position Requirements :

• Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or eligible for admission in short order.

• A minimum of six (6) years of full-time legal experience, including complex investigations and litigation experience, preferred.

• Civil enforcement experience is required; experience with criminal and/or regulatory enforcement is considered a plus.

• Demonstrated ability to develop factual records and translate investigations into enforcement outcomes, including litigation or negotiated resolutions.

• Experience working collaboratively with government partners, including law enforcement and regulatory agencies, is strongly preferred.

• Outstanding research, writing, and advocacy skills.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including other attorneys and staff.

• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Applicants must be Massachusetts Bar eligible at the time of application and must apply for admission before their start date. Candidates who are not yet admitted may be hired as 'Counsel' and must pass the Massachusetts Bar within one year of their start date.
