Job Description:
The Senior Group Manager, Payroll oversees a large and significant multi-faceted operational function with overall accountability for providing strategic direction, guidance on a broad and diverse range of complex operational activities / analysis and/or specialized project support or services.
Depth & Scope:
- Provides people management leadership by hiring the best talent, setting goals, developing staff, managing employee performance and compensation decisions, promoting teamwork and handling any/all disciplinary actions, as required
- Oversees a large team completing processes / transactions / activities characterized by single to multiple step transactions limited systems and jurisdictions, higher volumes and/ or low to medium complexity
- Advanced knowledge of the business and operational functions supported
- Work focus time horizon is generally medium term with moderate focus on strategic planning
- Requires advanced process management knowledge and expert knowledge of the risk profile for team processes supported; strong knowledge in identifying, tracking and resolving gaps
- Oversees management of team requiring workforce to decision on acceptable level of risk-Low to Moderate risk potential (loss/reputational) for functional area
- Acts as a team escalation contact for issues raised from other internal groups and partners
- Involves regular contact with cross-functional teams across TDBG or external contacts
Education & Experience:
- Undergraduate degree required
- 10+ years relevant experience required
- Sound knowledge and understanding of the operating environment, business process and procedures, and transaction lifecycle for own area
- Requires general understanding of the overall function and/or businesses supported
- Organized self-starter with excellent analytical, problem-solving and time management skills
- Detail oriented, high level of accuracy and ability to work independently
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Strong PC skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
- Strong customer orientation, interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with all levels of staff
Customer Accountabilities:
- Designs and provides assigned service or functionality for the HR Operations function
- Sets service and control standards, implements and operates systems to monitor service delivery
- Oversees research, development and implementation of new processes, technologies or operating models
- Develops and maintains working relationships with internal partners for the purposes of delivering optimal customer service
- Primary escalation points for significant risk matters / exceptions
- Leads the end-to-end payroll tax function across North American entities, ensuring alignment with enterprise strategy
- Provides coaching and development to front line Specialists and People Managers in their team
- Provides expert tax guidance to executive leadership, translating complex regulations into actionable insights
- Ensures accurate, timely, and compliant execution of payroll tax operations, including reconciliations and financial integration
- Monitors regulatory changes and leads proactive risk mitigation and compliance initiatives
- Serves as the primary liaison with tax authorities; leads audit readiness and manages internal/external engagements
- Establishes and enforces governance frameworks, control standards, and decision logs
- Drives strategic projects and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency
- Represents the function in system implementations, upgrades, and automation efforts
- Leads, mentors, and develops a high-performing team; oversees performance management and succession planning
- Models ethical leadership and fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and resilience
- Collaborates with Finance, Legal, HR, and other internal partners to ensure seamless service delivery
- Owns communication strategies for regulatory updates, process changes, and incident response
- Partners with Global HR Services, Finance, Legal, and other key stakeholders to ensure payroll strategies are integrated into broader organizational initiatives. Represent Payroll in enterprise-wide projects and governance forums
- Champions a respectful, inclusive, and performance-driven team culture. Empowers staff to meet evolving challenges, achieve operational targets, and grows professionally within the organization
- Leads ongoing reviews of payroll procedures, controls, and documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory, audit, and business requirements. Drives enhancements that support scalability and future-readiness
