What's the role?
The Senior Commodity Derivatives Sales and Originator role is part of the Shell Trading and Supply Commodity Derivatives Trading team, integrating derivative sales and price risk marketing with a clear mandate to drive portfolio expansion and business growth through strategically developed portfolio‑level deals and innovative pricing solutions.
The role will be Houston‑based and collaborate closely with the derivatives trading team and wider Trading and Supply organisation responsible for market‑making and the management of risks arising from executed trades.

As Senior Commodity Derivatives Sales & Originator, you are expected to generate sustainable flow volume with an appropriate risk and return profile for the Shell Trading and Supply Commodity Derivatives Trading team. Success in the role requires strong market expertise and relationship management skills to develop compelling value propositions for counterparties, while ensuring disciplined and efficient use of Shell's credit and capital resources.

In addition, the role carries a clear business development mandate, focused on expanding the derivatives franchise across priority counterparties, sectors and geographies. This includes originating new commercial opportunities, deepening strategic relationships, and proactively identifying areas where Shell can grow market presence and relevance through tailored risk management solutions, ultimately supporting long‑term portfolio and business growth.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Build strong and productive relationships with internal and external counterparties, leveraging established networks to originate and develop new business opportunities
- Define, refine, and execute the sales and marketing strategy to grow revenue and margins in the United States derivatives market
- Professionally originate and articulate innovative risk management solutions, clearly communicating both commercial merits and associated risks while taking full account of market, credit, liquidity, regulatory and reputational considerations
- Work closely with Trading and Supply and other Downstream businesses to enhance existing deal flows and unlock new cross‑business opportunities at key interfaces
- Collaborate actively across the broader deal ecosystem, including Traders, Business Development teams, M&A, Finance, Legal, Technical Accounting, Contracts, Credit, Tax and Back Office functions
- Share relevant market intelligence, client insights, and deal knowledge across the global Shell Trading Network
- Maintain a solid working knowledge of Dodd‑Frank regulations and ensure compliant execution of derivative activities
- Help integrate and roll-out T&S' Electronic Sales capabilities with external counterparties
- Partner closely with control functions including Legal, Compliance, Market Risk, Credit Risk, Audit and Finance to ensure robust governance and control frameworks
- Promote and embed a strong culture of responsible finance, sound governance, effective supervision, cost discipline and ethical conduct
All activities to be carried out within the control and compliance framework of Shell Trading & Supply.
What you bring
- The candidate must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
- Bachelor's degree or higher is required
- Minimum of 5 years' professional experience in derivatives sales and business development, with a strong track record of external negotiation in client- facing roles and well- established client relationships
- Strong ability to originate and scale portfolio‑level opportunities, moving from individual trades to broader, repeatable client solutions
- Demonstrated capability to identify and prioritise growth opportunities across counterparties, products and geographies, with a clear sense of return on capital
- Comfortable operating in volatile and fast‑moving markets, with the judgement to balance commercial opportunities against risk, liquidity and balance sheet constraints
- Proven ability to work across organisational boundaries to align commercial, trading and risk objectives, and translate complexity into executable outcomes
- Experience managing long sales cycles and complex negotiations involving multiple stakeholders, both internally and externally
- Pragmatic, solutions‑oriented mindset with the ability to move from strategy to execution and deliver tangible commercial outcomes
- Strong appreciation of governance, controls and regulatory expectations in derivatives markets, with the judgement to operate effectively within them
- Ability to influence without authority, building credibility with senior stakeholders across Trading, Risk, Legal and Finance
- Long‑term franchise mindset, focused on sustainable growth, client relevance and reinforcing Shell's position as a trusted counterparty
What we offer
The base salary range for this position is $184,000 - $276,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.
Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
