What's the role

The Rail Planner is responsible for actively engaging rail carriers. The position will also serve within the Chemicals rail center of excellence for all downstream businesses and work across functional stakeholders on day-to-day rail processes to ensure that the maximum value is extracted from Logistics Service Provider (LSP) contracts and uphold KPIs for the LSPs and the various Service Level Agreements (SLA) which need to be continuously met.

This role acts as the Rail Freight SME for the enterprise during the tender negotiations making sure data integrity, operational excellence and continuous improvement optimize costs through the value chain.

Accountabilities:

  • Drive continuous improvement in logistics processes and reduce inefficiency and costs throughout the Downstream rail networks
  • Maintain and continuously improve tools and processes utilized to track and optimize rail movements
  • Proactively monitor flow of rail within the existing systems, work with transport providers, Customer Center, Supply and Trading to streamline, and/or escalate issues that require additional support
  • Responsible for tracking and tracing rail cars throughout North America on an exception basis to ensure customer needs are being met
  • Facilitate and support Downstream Operations and Commercial organizations to ensure that all required rail transportation operations services are delivered in a safe, efficient, reliable, cost effective and sustainable manner
  • Directly support Rail Freight Contract Manager as the first line of defense in escalating carrier issues

What you bring
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, or any related field, or equivalent experience is preferred
  • At least 3 years of work experience
  • Experience in customer service, logistics, operations, and/or supply chain
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn and apply, railcar regulations and hazardous material certifications
  • Ability to engage, build strong relationships, and meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to handle stress and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Systems proficiency (GSAP, MS Suite, Bourque, railroad internet sites)
  • Demonstrated disciplined time management and ability to prioritize activities effectively while managing multiple stakeholders across downstream businesses (e.g., Chemicals, Trading, Catalyst, Lubricants) with diverse needs
  • Proven initiative to stay informed about business developments to better support stakeholder requirements
  • Ability to proactively engage stakeholders through various channels, including phone, email, online portals, BPRs, SLA reviews, and other communication methods


What we offer

The base salary range for this position is $103,000 - $155,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
