State Government Relations Manager

An exciting opportunity at the nexus of politics, energy, and technology: the full-time state government relations manager in Washington, DC, will have a chance to serve on Schneider Electric's North American Government Relations team, supporting the Chief Public Policy Officer (CPPO), Chief of Staff, and working in close partnership with key leaders in the Federal and State Government Relations teams as well as the Marketing, Brand, and Communications functions. The state government relations manager will join the Washington, DC-based team to support Schneider Electric's policy and advocacy strategy with top national associations for state government and lead the strategy for key states on the East Coast of the United States, including Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. The manager will work closely with the Federal and State Government Relations team to support the development and execution of a cohesive state government relations strategy to advance the corporate strategy. The manager will also support the team's strategy for Schneider Electric's manufacturing footprint states, including support as needed in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri. Responsibilities include advocacy on critical energy and technology policy topics including energy management broadly, energy reliability, grid, cyber-security, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing. The manager will also serve as a primary point of contact, working with Washington-based national groups leading state advocacy at the national level, including the National Governors Association (NGA) and the National Association of Energy Offices (NASEO). The manager will work directly with the CPPO and in coordination with the team's Chief of Staff to develop, execute, and measure an effective state strategy and operational plan. The individual will work closely with all members of the team to share knowledge and work collectively to implement the plan.

In this role, the manager will be responsible for internal and external activity, including the following:
- Lead strategy development consultation and execution for a state government relations strategy including targeted work in the east coast of the United States, from New York to Florida, with a key emphasis on Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida;
- Particular focus will develop strategies in Washington, DC with key state associations, consultants, industry groups, and in top facilities in the East Coast, including Massachusetts North American Headquarters and operations in the Carolinas.
- Lead the work to strengthen the team's operational success by managing the team's internal workstreams and managing timelines to support internal administrative reports to give visibility to the Government Relations team's work.
- Develop relationships with members of state legislatures, state agency officials, local government, and state/local industry associations to support the strategy.
- Support Schneider Electric's business units in their goals.
- Manage relationships with the National Governor's Association (NGA) and their federal affairs directors in Washington, DC;
- Lead management of Schneider Electric's engagements with key policy organizations, including the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), National Council of State Legislators (NCSL), and other relevant groups based in Washington, DC.
- Manage consultants to support a cohesive strategy
- Creatively plan and execute hosted events and fly-ins to engage in advocacy.
- Lead policy thought leadership and support external comms strategy.
Skillsets:
- Strong ability to digest policy and effectively develop a strategy to advocate for key priorities.
- Proven experience developing and implementing government relations strategies.
- Prior experience in state government, legislation, policy, or relevant associations (at least 5 years).
- Prior experience in energy policy, technology policy, or other relevant sectoral lobbying or advocacy.
- Effective communicator, internally and externally.
- Strong team player and self-starter.
- Understanding of energy policy landscape or transferable exposure to another sector.
- Creative thinking in highlighting challenges or barriers to digitization and or automation.
For this U.S. based position, the expected compensation range is $139,200 - $208,800 per year, which includes base pay and short-term incentive.
The compensation range for this full-time position applies to candidates located within the United States. Our salary ranges are determined by reviewing roles of similar responsibility and level. Within the salary range, individual pay is determined by several factors including performance, knowledge, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Qualifications:
- Have 3-7 years of experience with state and local government relations working in a state legislature, for a Governor, at a government agency, industry association, private sector, or NGO;
- Hold a degree in Political Science, Public Administration, International Affairs, Government Relations, Economics, Law, or similar;
- Have excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Excel at managing numerous projects as a contributor and self-starter
Travel expectation: The position is based in Washington, DC, with regular travel to Boston and other states
