What we are looking for
We are seeking a hands-on software engineering leader with deep experience in C++/object-oriented software, industrial automation and modernization of mature mission-critical software platforms. The ideal candidate has spent significant years writing and reviewing production software before moving into engineering leadership, and can lead highly experienced principal engineers, architects and subject matter experts with credibility.
About the Role
This role will lead engineering talent responsible for the modernization, sustainment and evolution of distributed control software and related industrial automation capabilities. The leader will help convert deep installed-base expertise into scalable engineering practices, reusable architecture patterns and future-ready software platforms, while partnering with India-based teams to build the next generation engineering bench.
Responsibilities
- Lead global software engineering teams delivering reliable, secure and maintainable distributed control software and industrial automation capabilities.
- Drive modernization of mature products and platforms using disciplined architecture, refactoring, automated testing and incremental migration strategies.
- Own technical execution for software components related to control configuration, operator workflows, system management, control services, device interfaces and industrial application frameworks.
- Translate domain knowledge from senior SMEs into reusable engineering standards, playbooks, design patterns and onboarding assets.
- Ensure developers own quality through unit testing, test-driven development practices, code reviews and close collaboration with the Software Engineering & Test Manager.
- Lead, mentor and coach highly experienced engineers and architects, creating an environment where deep domain expertise and modern software practices reinforce each other.
- Build a strong engineering-management bench in Hyderabad while maintaining effective collaboration with senior experts in the US and other global locations.
- Recruit, develop and retain leaders who are technically credible, quality-oriented and comfortable working across global teams.
- Provide technical direction on C++ architecture, object-oriented design, modularization, code quality, performance, reliability and maintainability.
- Chair or actively participate in architecture reviews, design reviews and critical code-quality discussions.
- Partner with Systems Engineering and MBSE leaders to align software architecture with system behavior, requirements, interfaces and verification strategy.
- Promote engineering practices such as TDD, automated regression, static analysis, secure coding, CI/CD integration and technical-debt reduction.
- Partner with Product Management, UX, Systems Engineering, Architecture, DevOps/DevSecOps and Test Engineering to plan and deliver high-quality releases.
- Sequence modernization work against customer commitments, installed-base risk, technical debt and platform roadmap needs.
- Use engineering metrics and transparent operating rhythms to improve flow, quality, productivity and accountability.

- Work effectively with senior SMEs, Product Management, UX, System Architects, DevOps/DevSecOps, Cybersecurity, Test Engineering and global delivery teams.
- Communicate complex modernization trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Create a constructive peer partnership with the Cloud Native Platform manager and the Software Engineering & Test Manager.
- Establish modernization roadmaps that balance business continuity, installed-base obligations and future platform strategy.
- Continuously improve engineering standards, onboarding, knowledge capture, automation, architecture governance and quality practices.
- Use AI-assisted engineering, knowledge management and automation thoughtfully to scale scarce domain expertise.
- C++, C#, .NET or equivalent object-oriented languages; REST APIs; GitHub Enterprise; Azure DevOps; Jira; Confluence; static analysis and automated build/test tooling.
- CI/CD pipelines, release automation, cybersecurity tooling, artifact management and software supply-chain practices.
- Experience applying AI-assisted software engineering techniques to improve developer productivity, quality, knowledge management, test automation or engineering workflows is preferred.
- 15+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on development in C++ and object-oriented software design.
- 5+ years of software engineering management experience leading senior engineers, architects or technical leads.
- Strong experience with industrial automation, distributed control systems, control software, HMI/operator interfaces, engineering tools, runtime systems, field devices or mission-critical OT software.
- Proven experience modernizing legacy software products, platforms and engineering teams without compromising customer continuity or product reliability.
- Working knowledge of distributed systems, networking, high availability, cybersecurity fundamentals and secure software development practices.
- Familiarity with cloud-native architecture, APIs, microservices, containers and AI-enabled software engineering workflows is expected; deeper expertise is a plus.
- Experience collaborating with Product Management, UX, Systems Engineering/MBSE, Architecture, Quality Engineering, Cybersecurity and DevOps/DevSecOps teams in a scaled product-development environment.
- Experience leading geographically distributed teams across multiple time zones and cultures; experience working with North America, Europe and India-based teams is preferred.
- Experience with leading industrial automation platforms such as Schneider Electric, Siemens, Honeywell, Emerson, ABB, Rockwell, AVEVA, Yokogawa.
- Experience with OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, industrial networking, IEC 62443, CRA or cybersecurity compliance in OT environments.
- Proficiency in systems engineering, design thinking, and test-driven development is a strong plus.
