The role

We are recruiting a Senior Legal Counsel, to join our Business Legal Team to provide strategic legal support in Japan partnering closely with business leaders and functional teams to ensure compliant, commercially sound, and risk‑balanced decision‑making. This role requires strong cross‑jurisdictional advisory experience and the ability to operate autonomously.

Location: This role supports a flexible hybrid model with some working from home options available. The local office is in Tokyo. You should expect some occasional travel to other locations in East Asia as business need is determined. Travel may include some overnight stays.
What will you do?

  • Preparing, reviewing and supporting negotiations of a number of contracts including commercial, distribution, software, procurement, construction, oil & gas and industry standard contracts
  • Lead or support cluster initiatives, policy rollouts & template localisation
  • Providing claims support and overseeing litigations
  • Any other function as assigned from time to time.
  • Helping to ensure compliance with applicable laws and Group policies including driving the competition law program
  • Partner with senior leaders across commercial, HR, finance, procurement, operations, and corporate functions
  • Support corporate governance & entity management
  • Provide training to the business
  • Other general legal support as reasonably required by Legal Management to service the SMBT operations.

Who will you report to?

General Counsel - East Asia & Japan

What qualifications will make you successful for this role?
  • A fully qualified lawyer with a Bachelor's degree in Law and at least 6 years' relevant PQE
  • English and Japanese language abilities required both in spoken and written.
  • Excellent negotiation, drafting, and communication skills
  • Experience managing multi‑jurisdictional regulatory issues
  • Worked in an international company and has a proven track record operating in an inhouse environment
  • Work proactively and closely with the business stakeholders, to identify and analyse critical commercial and legal issues
  • Commercially minded, highly organized, and able to work effectively in teams
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal)
  • Great technological skills
