Intern: Protection Design for Bipolar DC Grids - DC Systems by Schneider Electric

Your mission?

In order to make optimal utilization of cables and to provide for higher efficient systems, bipolar DC grids could be utilized. In this type of grids the protection scheme and protection devices need to be carefully selected.

The most suitable protection type for DC grids is solid-state electronics based protection. However, electronics have very tight voltage margins and can easily breakdown due to over-voltages.

The end goal of this project is to provide design guidelines (if any) for solid-state circuit breakers that will be used in bipolar DC grids.

Project Deliverables:

What is expected at the end of the project is:

  • Research on bipolar DC grids (as defined in Current/OS)
    • What distribution configurations are available and how do they impact the design of the SSCB??
  • Research on different earthing arrangements between the AC and DC system:
    • What grounding configurations are available and how do they impact the design of the SSCB?
  • Full SSCB design (1 prototype to be made):
    • Topology selection and a complete simulation
    • Semiconductor selection
    • Loss calculation
    • Heatsink sizing
    • Schematics and PCB design
    • Prototype of the SSCB
    • Verification of the prototype

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • MSc or PhD student (preferably in last year of studies)
  • Strong knowledge of power electronics and ability to read schematic and PCB design (advantageous)
  • Strong understanding of analog electronics (plus)
  • Experience with laboratory testing
  • Strong communication skills for internal and customer presentations
  • Proactive mindset and ability to work in a multicultural environment
  • Fluency in English; Dutch is an advantage
