HVAC Mechanical Install Technician - Job Description
The HVAC Mechanical Install Technician is responsible for installing, replacing, and commissioning commercial HVAC systems, including rooftop units, split systems, ventilation equipment, and controls. This role oversees mechanical installation projects from start to finish, ensuring systems are installed to specification, meet safety and code requirements, and operate at peak performance.
Responsibilites:
- Run mechanical installation projects, ensuring timelines, materials, and work quality meet project standards.
- Oversee installation crews and subcontractors to ensure proper installation practices and safety compliance.
- Conduct onsite assessments to prepare for mechanical installs, replacements, and system upgrades.
System Installation & Replacement
- Install HVAC equipment including RTUs, AHUs, furnaces, condensers, heat pumps, ventilation systems, and chilled water components.
- Perform full replacement of HVAC equipment, including removal of outdated units, rigging, placement, and startup.
- Connect and set up ductwork systems, including sheet metal and flex duct installation.
Mechanical, Controls & Electrical Work
- Install and configure HVAC control systems, thermostats, BAS/controls wiring, and related components.
- Wire line‑voltage and low‑voltage connections for heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
- Install refrigerant piping, braze copper lines, and pressure test systems for leaks.
Technical Compliance & Quality Checks
- Ensure all work aligns with manufacturer specifications, engineering drawings, and local building codes.
- Handle refrigerants according to EPA guidelines; recover, evacuate, charge, and verify system performance.
- Conduct system startups, commissioning, and operational testing.
Site & Job Preparation
- Load materials, tools, and equipment needed for each job.
- Maintain accurate documentation of completed work and project progress.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 3-5+ years of HVAC installation experience in commercial, industrial, or mixed‑use environments.
- Experience running mechanical install projects preferred.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams.
- Proficiency in brazing, refrigerant piping installation, sheet metal work, and HVAC controls.
- Troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and control system issues.
Licenses & Certifications
- EPA Section 608 Certification required.
- State/local mechanical licenses preferred (if applicable).
Tools & Physical Requirements
- Ability to use HVAC hand tools, gauges, multimeters, brazing equipment, and lifts.
- Comfortable working on rooftops, in mechanical rooms, and in various climate conditions.
- Able to lift 50+ lbs and work in tight or elevated spaces.
