What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a Electromechanical Technologist to perform a variety of duties that will assist engineers in research, testing, and the development of mechanical and electromechanical engineering designs, fabrications, assemblies, and components. Roughly 80% of the work for this position is in the laboratory and involves working with, and in the vicinity of, explosive materials. The job is diverse and requires the ability to work within a changing environment. Duties will include teaming with Principal Investigators and technical staff members, designing and operating 3-D printers and other prototyping machinery, metrology, and reporting.
The ideal candidate is a person who wants to perform explosives research and development in a challenging fast paced environment where they will build, participate in, and document experiments performed inside and outside this lab. The position involves the formulation of energetic materials through various techniques, including mixing, recrystallization, and milling. Staff mentoring is included to grow the candidate into this position, which also includes extensive training to safely handle explosives and learn the appropriate work controls necessary for conducting safe operations in the laboratory.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Use hand & shop tools, welding equipment, and other ancillary tools/equipment
- Utilize electrical diagnostic equipment
- Draft detailed drawings for fabrication using software such as SolidWorks
- Fabricate and assemble new or modified mechanical components or assemblies
- Assemble explosive test articles
- Handle explosive materials
- Assist with test set up and clean up
- Analyze data and recommend modifications to designs or test procedures to meet desired specifications
- Work with changing projects and can expect responsibilities to be a mixture of novel design/development work followed by meticulous sample assembly tasks
- Be involved with ES&H activities in the laboratory and documentation of operational procedures
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$74,700 - $144,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Associate¿s degree in science, engineering, or technology; or four years of equivalent explosive experience
- Experience working with mechanical and/or electrical systems and equipment
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Excellent Written and Oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work under minimal direction to execute tasks
- Experience implementing and following established documented safety procedures.
- Demonstrated experience working independently according to work instructions or procedures.
- Experience using engineering drawings or schematics to maintain or build electromechanical equipment.
- Knowledge and experience with installing, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and/or electrical systems and equipment
- Experience with explosives or other hazardous materials in a high safety rigor environment
- The ability to communicate effectively and work with diverse individuals and teams
- Knowledge of Sandia National Laboratories¿ policies, practices, and procedures
